Pursey Early Goal Propels Soccer to Blanking of Davidson

Second-straight shutout of the season for the Catamounts

The Basics
Score: Western Carolina 1, Davidson 0
Records: Western Carolina 3-2, Davidson 2-3
Location: Alumni Soccer Stadium, Davidson, N.C.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Valentine Pursey scored the lone goal in the match to help propel Western Carolina women's soccer to a 1-0 blanking of Davidson Thursday at the Alumni Soccer Stadium.

Goalkeeper Melody Mezzina's heroic last-minute save in the final two seconds of the match kept Davidson from tying the match and secured the win.

How it Happened
  • Pursey scored four minutes into the match taking a pass from the right side by Kirsten Hahn who placed it right in front of the goal. Pursey buried it past the goalkeeper in front of the sticks.
 Individual Leaders:
  • Pursey scored the lone goal – her second in as many matches.
  • Rookie Kirsten Hahn picked up an assist on Pursey's goal.
  • Junior Mezzina earned her second-straight shutout in her second start of the season. She improves to 2-0 on the year. She ended with five saves in the contest.
  • Rea Syska, Reily Nelson, and Alexis DeMarco each had two shots in the contest.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Canuck, Mezzina, was on the case in the waning seconds of the match as Davidson attempted to knot the contest with under two seconds remaining. Wildcat Rachel Schleichler took a shot to the right side but Mezzina reached out her paw and denied the scoring attempt.
  • Western Carolina had nine shots in the match, six coming in the second half.
  • Davidson took 11 shots in the contest, with six on goal.
 News & Notes:
  • Since Mezzina has returned to prowl the goal the Catamounts have not allowed a goal in the last 180 minutes – posting back-to-back shutouts.
  • The shutout by Mezzina is the 10th of her career which ranks fourth in the WCU record books. Her career total of 80 saves ranks ninth.
  • Western Carolina has won three of its last four matches and has won two straight road contests.
  • Hahn now leads the Catamounts with six points with two goals and two assists.
  • Pursey has scored a goal in the last two matches. For her career, dating back to her time at IUPUI, she has 29 career goals.
  • Western Carolina avenged a 1-0 loss to Davidson just seven months ago, Feb. 21, 2021, in Cullowhee. WCU has now won two of the last three match-ups against the Wildcats earning their seventh win overall against Davidson.
