CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer dropped its Southern Conference home opener 3-0 to Mercer Friday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Bears scored all three of their goals in the first half.
Individual Leaders:
- Mercer's Kendall Cook scored a goal and had an assist in the match.
- The Bear's Ally Fordham scored the first goal of the match.
- Catamount Kirsten Hahn had four shots in the match, two on goal.
Inside the Box Score
- Mercer got on the board at the 20th minute scoring off a corner kick in which Fordham headed the ball in.
- Cook took a booming pass from Schurr that looked like it was a cross but it sailed into the goal in the top right of the goal.
- Nicole Icen, sister of former Catamount goalkeeper Natalia Icen, scored the third goal for the Bears at the 43rd minute.
- After taking three shots in the first 45 minutes, Western Carolina came out swinging in the second half. The Catamounts took 11 shots to end the match with 14. Mercer had six shots in the first half and five in the second for 11.
- The Catamounts had solid looks in the second half but couldn't get one to find the back of the net. Early in the second half rookie Hahn saw her open shot skim the right side of the goal while Valentine Pursey took a shot at the 51st minute that skimmed the top of the goal.
- Mezzina suffered her second loss of the season falling to 4-2-1 on the year.
News & Notes:
- The three goals by Catamount goalkeeper Melody Mezzina is the most she has given up this season. It is the most goals given up by the Catamounts in six matches, since the loss to top-five Duke.
- Western Carolina was shut out for the fourth time this season.
- The loss to Mercer halts a two-match winning streak by the Catamounts.
