Pursey's Early Goal Lifts Catamounts to Shutout Win Over The Citadel

Catamounts earn first conference win of the season

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer earned its first Southern Conference victory of the season shutting down The Citadel 1-0 Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. 
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Valentine Pursey scored the lone goal of the contest for the Catamounts. 
  • Naya Marcil added an assist in the match – her first of the season. 
  • Junior goalkeeper Melody Mezzina posted her sixth shutout of the season with four saves improving to 5-2-1 on the year.  
 
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Pursey's long goal four minutes into the match took any question about when the Catamounts would score. Rookie Marcil back-peddled a pass to Pursey who took a long shot from about 20 yards out and finds the back of the net.  
  • Shots were almost even as Western Carolina had 14 and The Citadel had 13. 
  • Mezzina had a beauty of a save in the 32nd minute as the Bulldogs' shot attempt sailed just at the crossbar and she tapped it over and out. 
  • Sophomore Maggie Lloyd led the Catamounts with four shots. 
 
News & Notes:
  • The Catamounts earned their sixth shutout of the season. 
  • WCU is now 18-1-2 all-time against The Citadel. 
  • With her goal against The Citadel, Pursey now leads the team with three goals on the season. 
  • The Bulldogs were shut out for the third time this season with the loss to the Catamounts. Before running into WCU, The Citadel was averaging 3.3 goals per game. 
  • Mezzina now has 27 saves on the season and 100 in her career which ranks ninth in the WCU record books. 
  • Mezzina also has a 0.51 goals-against average and a .871 save percentage for the season. 
  • All three of Pursey's goals this season have been game winners.
 
 UPCOMING:
  • Western Carolina travels to Furman on Friday and Wofford on Sunday in the Catamounts' first conference road contests of the season.
