Peacock Tied for Fourth, WCU Men’s Golf Fifth at JT Poston Invitational

South Carolina leads Chattanooga by two strokes entering the final round

Sapphire, N.C. – Western Carolina freshman Jake Peacock fired a two-round score of 6-under par 136 on Monday to lead the Catamounts to fifth-place after 36 holes at the 2021 JT Poston Invitational hosted at the beautiful par-71, 7,007-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Second-place after the first round, South Carolina carries a two-stroke advantage over Chattanooga atop the team leaderboard into Tuesday's final 18 holes. The Gamecocks shot 547 (274-273), with the Mocs firing 276 and 273 for a two-round score of 549.

Both South Carolina and Chattanooga have a pair of golfers in contention for medalist honors amidst the top seven individuals, paced by UTC's Braedon Wear atop the leaderboard with a score of 10-under 132. His teammate Paul Conroy is a stroke in arrears at 133 in the runner-up spot, with Belmont's Evan Davis in contention just three strokes off the pace in third at 135. Defending medalist Ryan Hall of South Carolina is among four tied for fourth that includes his teammate Jack Wall, WCU's Peacock, and Tobias Jonsson from Mercer.

Wear is on pace to break the tournament's 54-hole scoring record of 199 currently held by USC's Hall set back in 2019. Hall was the first collegiate golfer to crack the 200-threshold at the event.
In the overall team race, behind South Carolina and Chattanooga is Middle Tennessee (553) after posting the fifth-lowest single round in tournament history over the first 18 holes at 268. The Blue Raiders slid to third, though, with a second-round 285. Tied for fourth after the opening round, Belmont (557) pulled ahead of WCU (562) to round out the top five teams.

Chromatic matches, Appalachian State and Kennesaw State, share sixth-place in the standings a stroke behind the Catamounts at 563 with two-time defending champion Georgia Southern (564) in eighth ahead of Palmetto Upstate and Southern Conference rivals Wofford (9th, 565) and Furman (10th, 567). Rounding out the field are UNC Wilmington (573) in 11th, followed by Morehead State (577), Mercer (578), and Central Arkansas (601).

Peacock, who matched his career-low round of 66 over the opening 18 holes, is just four strokes off the lead entering Tuesday's final round. On Monday, he carded 10 total birdies, including six over the first 18 holes and four in the afternoon round. After shooting 5-under in round one, the Milton, Ga., product could never supplant 1-under par over his second round in shooting 70.

Junior Magnus Pederson fired rounds of 3-under par 68 and 1-over par 72 for a 36-hole score of 140, down eight spots in the standings into a tie for 19th. The Norwegian-born striker countered three bogeys with six birdies in round one while carding three more birdies in the afternoon.

Rounding out WCU's scoring five are freshman Kyle Kushnir and senior Tumi Kúld in a tie for 44th overall at 2-over par 144, and sophomore Presten Richardson up 13 spots into a tie for 50th overall at 3-over par, 145. Kushnir and Richardson had six birdies apiece, while Kúld had five on Monday.

Playing unattached as an individual, senior Louis Theys carded a team-best, career-low round of 6-under par 65 in the second round to bounce back into a tie for 44th overall. The Villers-Perwin, Belgium, native climbed 39 spots in the standings with his incredible second round, the biggest gainer over the second 18 holes. Junior Quinton Metz follows Theys in a tie for 80th (154) and true freshman Kiefer Bulau in 87th (166), making his collegiate debut.

On Monday, Middle Tennessee State's Nick Wolf broke the tournament record for lowest single-round score by shooting 63 that included nine pars, a bogey, seven birdies, and a hole-in-one on the par-3, 140-yard 11th hole. Wolf usurped South Carolina's Ryan Hall and Jamie Wilson who carded scores of 7-under par 64 during the 2019 tournament.

Tuesday's final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m and 8:35 a.m., with tee times off both the front and back nine at nine-minute increments. WCU's scoring five is paired with golfers from Belmont and Kennesaw State and will go off the first tee beginning at 9:20 a.m. Live scoring through GolfStat is available online through a link at CatamountSports.com.
