Field Events Lead Catamounts at Mondo Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A 1-2 finish in the men's triple jump along with three runner-up finishes in field events highlighted Western Carolina performances Saturday at the Mondo Invitational held at the JDL Fast Track.
 
"I'm pretty happy with what we were able to do this weekend," head coach Jesse Norman stated. "We were able to come back off of break and still be able to do some good things. I'm pretty excited about the performances of the field event student-athletes. I felt like the distance group did a good job with some securing conference qualifying marks. We are in a good spot as we continue looking ahead towards the end of the season and what we need to tune up as we get closer."
 
Javell Brown won the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.54 meters (47'8.5") and was followed by his twin brother Javon in second place. Javon Brown used a personal best leap of 14.27 meters (46'10") to earn his runner-up spot. Kaleb Ambrose placed eighth after posting a leap of 13.19 meters (43'3.25").
 
Brandon Harvey finished in second place in the high jump after he cleared a height of 1.97 meters (6'5"). Khadevis Snead was fourth with a new personal best height of 1.92 meters (6'3.5").
 
Tyler Rodriguez was the runner-up in the men's long jump thanks to a leap of 6.81 meters (22'4.25"). Harvey placed third in the long jump with a distance of 6.78 meters (22'3"). Ambrose earned his second top-eight finish of the meet, finishing seventh with a mark of 6.53 meters (21'5.25").
 
Charles Cooley finished in second place in the men's pole vault as he cleared a height of 4.60 meters (15'1"). Jonathan Lehe placed eighth after he cleared a height of 4.30 meters (14'1.25"). Thomas Martin was 10th after topping out at a height of 4.15 meters (13'7.25").
 
Ryan Eldridge was 10th in the men's weight throw with a top distance of 13.84 meters (45'5").
 
In men's running events, Jalen Elwell finished second in the men's 1,000-meter run with a personal best time of 2:37.19. Elwell was sixth in the mile run thanks to a personal best time of 4:28.56. Rodriguez finished third in the men's 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.22. Elijah Stuart completed the 800-meter run in 2:01.99 to finish in third place. Joshua Stapleton finished sixth in the men's 600-meters thanks to his time of 1:26.55. Will Mitchell placed seventh in the men's 3,000-meter run with a personal best time of 8:57.21, just ahead of Clay Summers in eighth place thanks to his time of 8:57.76.
 
In women's running results, Armani Blair earned a fifth-place result in the women's 60-meter dash with a finishing time of 7.81. Sydney Runyan posted a new personal best time of 10:36.78 in the 3,000-meter run to score a fifth-place finish.
 
Omare McBride finished fourth in the high jump after she cleared a height of 1.57 meters (5'1.75"). McBride picked up her second fourth-place finish of the meet in the triple jump with a mark of 11.20 meters (36'9").
 
Carter Unger placed fourth in the pole vault with a top height of 3.40 meters (11'1.75"). Sydney Gallant finished ninth in her Catamount debut with a height of 3.10 meters (10'2").
 
Blair also finished in ninth place in the high jump, clearing a bar set at 4.97 meters (16'3.75"). Derica Currie placed 10th as she cleared a height of 4.95 meters (16'3").
 
WCU heads to the Brant Tolsma Invitational hosted by Liberty next weekend. The meet begins with the heptathlon and pentathlon on Thursday with additional events on Friday and Saturday.
