Catamounts Open 2022 With Win over Lenoir-Rhyne

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis won the opening match of the 2022 season defeating Lenoir-Rhyne 5-2 Wednesday at the Catamount Tennis Complex.
 
 
TURNING POINT:
The Catamounts took the doubles match, winning two of three, and won four of the five singles matches played.
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Western Carolina took the doubles point winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
  • The Catamounts went on to win at No. 3 singles, Luzia Obermeier 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 1 singles, Kata Foldeak, 6-4, 6-3, to go up 3-0.
  • Lenoir Rhyne got on the board when Alicia Wahlberg defeated the Catamounts' Jacy Smith 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
  • Western Carolina went on to sweep the remaining singles matches with wins at No. 4 singles, Antonella Benavides 6-3, 6-2, and No. 5 singles, Hoda Habib 6-2, 6-4.
 NOTES:
  • Benavides won her 12th career match.
  • The Catamounts are now 10-2 all-time against Lenoir-Rhyne.
  • The match was considered an exhibition for the NCAA Division II Bears.
  • This is the second-straight season the Catamounts have opened with Lenoir-Rhyne.

Western Carolina travels to Clemson Saturday for a doubleheader with the Tigers at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
