Catamounts Snag Couple of Points in Pair of Losses at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis dropped a pair of matches at Clemson falling 6-1 and 5-1 Saturday at Duckworth Family Tennis Center.
 
Western Carolina did make a bit of history on Saturday picking up points against Clemson for the first time in each of the matches. Rookie Miray Konar won at No. 4 singles in the first match while the Catamounts earned a point in the second match of the day with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
 
TURNING POINT:
In the first match of the doubleheader Clemson swept the doubles matches to go up 1-0 and went on to win four of the five singles matches played.
 
In the second match of the day, the Catamounts took two of three matches in doubles, to go up 1-0 early, before dropping four of the completed singles matches played.  
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Konar became the first Catamount to get a win in singles against Clemson winning a marathon match at No. 4 singles, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8.
  • In match one, at No. 3 singles, Luzia Obermeier bounced back after dropping set one, 6-0, to take the second set to the wire before falling 6-7 (5-7).
  • In match two, Western Carolina took the early 1-0 lead winning two of the three doubles matches.
  • Clemson won the at No. 3 doubles before Konar and Kata Foldeak won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and Obermeier and Jordyn King got a 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point.
  • Clemson swept through three of the five completed singles matches for the win in match two.
  • Obermeier's match at No. 4 singles was unfinished.
  • Western Carolina did not have a player for No. 6 singles in either match.
 NOTES:
  • In the pair of matches against Clemson, Western Carolina took a point from the Tigers for the first time in the previous two meetings.
  • Konar saw her first action of the spring, in singles, in match one against Clemson picking up her first win of the season.
 UPCOMING:
Western Carolina travels to Kennesaw State Saturday, Jan. 29, for a 1:00 p.m. match with the Owls.
