Catamounts Open 2022 With Win Over Montreat

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball rang in 2022 with a 79-23 victory over visiting Montreat Sunday on Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center. 
 
Turning Point:
Tied at 2-2 to open the game, Western Carolina went on a 16-0 run ending the first quarter outscoring Montreat 28-11 in the first quarter and 22-2 in the second quarter. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Sophomore Zanoria Cruz led all scorers with 18 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
  • Freshman Bailey Trumm connected on five three-pointers scoring 15 points. 
  • Audrey Meyers was the third Catamount in double figures with 10. 
  • Caleigh Raby led Montreat with seven points. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina shot 48.4 percent from the field and held the Cavaliers to 20 percent. 
  • The Catamounts drained seven three-pointers in the game – game-high for WCU. 
  • Western Carolina led by as much as 58 points, with 2:19 left in the game. 
  • Western Carolina ripped down 46 rebounds, 29 on the defensive end, and held Montreat to 24. 
  • The Catamount had season highs in steals (16) and assists (19) against Montreat. 
  • Western Carolina scored 36 points off Montreat's 26 turnovers.

  • Trumm hit a career-high five three-pointers – the most by a Catamount this season. 
  • Cruz's 18 points against Montreat is a season-high. She has scored in double figures in back-to-back games and three of the last four games. 
  • The 79 points scored by the Catamounts, against Montreat, is a season-best for WCU. It's the fourth time this season the team has scored 70 or more points in a game. 
  • Western Carolina returned to the hardwood after an 11-day break from contests due to the holiday break. 
  • Mykaylyn Davis returned to the lineup after missing six games due to injury. She dished out a season-best six assists in the contest against Montreat.
