Catamount Volleyball Falls on Road to Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Fifth-year senior Merry Gebel led Western Carolina with 10 kills and junior libero Destinee Dorsey recorded a team-best 15 digs, but Western Carolina was unable to hold off Wofford in a 3-0 setback inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday night. The Terriers won the match by scores of 20-25, 13-25, and 22-25.

Wofford improves to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in SoCon action while Western Carolina drops to 9-6 and 2-1.

Gebel's 10 kills mark the 13th time this season she's finished in double figures offensively. In addition to Dorsey, Bailey Hartsough tallied double-digit digs with 11. Sydney Carlson led the Catamounts with 11 assists.

Kennedy Smith and Bella Zeman both recorded 13 kills to lead Wofford. Victoria Hensley dished out 43 assists while Abbey Richman and Smith tallied 19 and 18 digs, respectively.

A tightly contested opening set featured five ties and little separation early on. Tied at 17, a Zeman kill and a block by Sarah Barham put the Terriers in front and they pulled away down the stretch to earn the opening set win.

Wofford got off to a fast start in the second set and didn't look back as the Terriers led 2-0 in the match.

A Terrier error early in the third set gave WCU a 7-4 lead. Wofford led 16-14 following a Barham kill before the Catamounts took four of the next five points capped by a Gebel service ace for an 18-17 lead. Wofford grabbed the next three points and extended its advantage to 22-19 with a Zeman kill. The Catamounts trimmed their deficit to two, 23-21, on a Hartsough kill but would get no closer.

WCU continues its road trip Sunday, traveling to The Citadel for a 5 p.m. first serve.
