Magnus Pedersen rallied 11 positions and fifth-year transfer
Adam Hooker climbed 12 spots on Sunday as the Western Carolina men's golf team finished ninth at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate concluded at the par-72, 7,287-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The Catamounts collectively shot 879 at the 54-hole event, posting a final-round score of 295 on Sunday.
Pedersen carded a final-round 1-under par 71 to finish tied for 16th overall with a three-round score of 217, while Hooker posted a second-straight, even-par round of 72 to finish tied for 24th with a 54-hole tally of 220. Opening on the back nine, Pedersen had four bogeys against five pars to make the turn for home at 4-over on the day. The Moss, Norway, product finished with three birdies and a hole-in-one eagle on the par-3, 207-yard second to accompany five pars for a 5-under front and 1-under round. Hooker posted nine pars on the back nine before countering two bogeys with a pair of birdies for the 72.
Pablo Hernandez and
Louis Theys finished tied for 42nd overall, firing final rounds of 78 and 76, respectively, to get to the two-day total of 223. Rounding out the scoring five was
Ryan Thomas, closing with a 76 on Sunday to shoot 228 and finish in a tie for 63rd overall. Theys had a birdie and an eagle on the par-5 third on Sunday while Hernandez had a busy scorecard that did feature three birdies. Thomas birdied the first hole of his afternoon and had 14 pars in a 4-over final round.
Playing unattached, Raleigh-native
Josh Lendach matched his first round with a 1-over par 73 on Sunday to climb four positions on the last day to finish among the four-way tie for 42nd, matching Hernandez and Theys.
Paced by individual medalist Paul Conroy who climbed 15 positions with a final-round score of 10-under par 62 on Sunday, fellow Southern Conference foe Chattanooga charged three spots to the top of the leaderboard to win the team championship by nine strokes over a two-way tie between No. 37 Lipscomb and tournament host NC State. UTC finished with a three-round score of 847, followed by the runner-up tie at 856. Miami (Ohio) slid three spots into fourth with a team score of 867 with UNCW finishing fifth a stroke back at 868.
Conroy shot 206 to win by two strokes over Nick Lyerly of UNCG and Maximillian Steinlechner of NC State in a two-way tie for second at 208.
Western Carolina returns to action this weekend, concluding the fall portion of its 2022-23 schedule at the Furman Intercollegiate. Hosted by the Paladins at the Furman University Golf Course, the 54-hole tournament is scheduled for 36 holes on Saturday, Oct. 22 with the final round on Sunday, Oct. 23.
