Livi Weidmann recorded a team-best 10 kills while sophomore
Sarah Janourova contributed a career-best four service aces as Western Carolina completed the season sweep of Mercer with a 3-0 triumph over the Bears on Friday night inside Hawkins Arena. The Catamounts won the match by scores of 25-13, 25-21, and 25-18.
WCU improves to 14-7 overall and 7-2 in the Southern Conference while Mercer drops to 7-14 and 3-6.
Weidmann finished in double figures offensively for the second straight match and the sixth time this season.
Destinee Dorsey was credited with a match-best 22 digs while
Sydney Carlson dished out a team-high 16 assists.
Janourova recorded four of WCU's season-high 10 service aces, seven of which came in the first set. Friday's match marked the first time since Oct. 30, 2015, that the Catamounts recorded 10 or more service aces in a match, with the 2015 contest being a five-set affair.
Annie Karle led Mercer with 10 kills while Lexi Uhrhan had 11 digs. Kiera McCarles distributed a match-best 19 assists.
The Catamounts took the first four points of the match and led 13-3 following consecutive Janourova service aces. An ace by Carlson gave the Catamounts a 19-7 advantage with an
Eden Punch kill closing out the frame.
Trailing 6-4 in the second set, the Bears went on a 5-0 run to grab a 9-4 lead and held a 16-12 advantage thanks to a Jaida Howell kill. Following a timeout, a Weidmann kill sparked a 6-0 WCU that saw that Catamounts grab an 18-16 lead. After Mercer pulled within a point, WCU answered with four of the next five points and held off a late push to grab a 2-0 lead in the match.
With Mercer holding a 6-5 lead in the third set, a
Brooklyn Poling kill started a 5-1 Catamount spurt that gave the visitors a 10-7 lead. WCU pushed its advantage to 17-12 thanks to an
Eden Punch kill before the Bears clawed their way back within two, 18-16. WCU took five of the next six points to gain control of the set and clinched the match on a
Bailey Hartsough service ace.
WCU concludes its four-match road swing on Saturday, traveling to Samford for a 6 p.m. Eastern first serve. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with free live stats available on catamountsports.com.
