GREENVILLE, S.C. -Â Western Carolina redshirt junior Pablo Hernandez (-1) posted rounds of 71 and 70 to tie for 12th place to lead the Catamounts after the opening day of the 52nd Annual Furman Intercollegiate, which is being held this weekend at the par-71, 7,005-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.

Hernandez, a native of Madrid, Spain, teed of on No. 14 in each of the day's two rounds. He turned at even par in round one then notched three birdies on the front, including consecutive birdies on No. 2 and No. 3, to finish round one at even par. In round two, he turned at 2-over then went on a tear, birdieing three out of four holes from No. 4 through No. 7. Hernandez added a final birdie on No. 10 for a team-high five birdies in the round, finishing at 1-under 70. Â
Hernandez enters Sunday's final round seven strokes behind leader Daniel Cheng (-8) of James Madison, who leads the tournament with rounds of 68-88=134.
Fifth-year senior Louis Theys (+5) is tied for 39th after two rounds. He carded an even 71 with three birdies on the front nine in round one then totaled a 76 with a birdie on No. 5 in round two, while sophomore Ryan Thomas (+6) is tied for 46th entering the third round of play. Thomas tallied a team-high five birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 10 and No. 11 in round one, then eagled the par-5 No. 11 for a 73 in round two.
Senior Magnus Pedersen (+7) and graduate student Adam Hooker (+7) are tied for 50th after Saturday's two rounds. Pedersen carded a 74 with three birdies in round one and added a 75 with birdies on No. 1 and No. 15 in the day's second round, while Hooker shot a 73 with four birdies in the first round and a 76 with birdies on No. 2 and No. 15 in the afternoon round.
Redshirt freshman Josh Lendach (+2), who is playing as an individual, carded a 73 with birdies on No. 12 and No. 17 in round one then fired an even-par 71 with three birdies in round one. He enters Sunday's final round tie for 23rd, while sophomore Kiefer Bulau (+8), who also played as an individual, is in 83rd place after posting rounds of 86 and 79. He scored four birdies on the day.
Chattanooga (-3) leads the field by two strokes after two rounds of play. James Madison (-1) is in second, while host Furman (E) sits in third place. The Catamounts (+15) are tied for ninth with Campbell (+15) and USC Aiken (+15). Â
The Catamounts will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 8:20 a.m. Sunday in the third round of the 54-hole tournament and will play in a group with Francis Marion and Coastal Carolina. Admission is free to the event. Results and live tournament scoring are available via http://www.golfstat.com.
