Catamounts Shut Out ETSU on Senior Day

WCU earns No. 5 seed and first round bye in SoCon Championships

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer shutout ETSU 1-0 Sunday on Senior Day, at the Catamount Athletic Complex, in the final regular-season Southern Conference match of the season.
 
The Catamounts earn the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Championships and will face No. 4 seed UNCG Friday, Oct. 28. The quarterfinal match will be played at No. 1 seed Chattanooga's home field at 4 p.m.
 
Turning Point:
  • Western Carolina broke a scoreless tie by scoring the only goal of the match in the 53rd minute. 
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Sophomore Abbie Lainhart scored the lone goal of the match and recorded the first game-winning goal of her career. 
  • Freshman Isabella DeMarco provided the assist on Lainhart's goal. 
  • The Catamount defense was stifling only allowing ETSU five shots in the contest, one on goal. Rookie goalie Leanne Trudel only had one shot that was threatening and she picked up the save.  
 
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The Catamounts turned on the offensive pressure in the second half and it paid off early in the second half.
  • In the 53rd minute, Isabella DeMarco took a shot that ricocheted off a Buccaneer and the ball made its way to Lainhart on the right side. The play pulled ETSU's goalie away from the goal and Lainhart raised her right leg and punched the ball in for the score. 
  • Western Carolina ended the contest with 11 shots.
  • Isabella DeMarco and Maggie Lloyd each had three shots in the match. 
 
News & Notes:
  • Western Carolina shut out its sixth opponent of the season.
  • The Catamounts are now 10-8-2 all-time against ETSU avenging the 1-0 loss in 2021 in Johnson City, Tenn. WCU has three of the last four against the Buccaneers. 
  • With her assist against ETSU Isabella DeMarco ranks second on the team with four assists this year. She leads the team with 12 points. 
  • This will be the second-straight season Western Carolina will face UNCG in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Championships. WCU defeated the Spartans 1-0 in overtime last year.

  • Western Carolina is the No. 5 seed in the upcoming SoCon Championships and will take on No. 4 seed UNCG Friday, Oct. 28 on the Chattanooga campus.
