Catamounts Complete Day One of the NCCU Invite

Six Catamounts advance to quarterfinals

DURHAM, N.C. – Six Western Carolina women's tennis players picked up a victory in the first round of the NCCU Invitational Friday at Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts.

Results:
A Draw Singles:
Isabella Sambola received a first-round bye and met up with North Carolina A&T's Cielo Tapia Cruz in the second round. Sambola took the win 6-1, 6-4, and faces Warona Mdlulwa in the quarterfinals.

Madison Schwarz also got a first-round bye and defeated East Carolina's Kim Auesrswald 6-4, 6-3 to move to the quarterfinals. She is set to face Josephine Schaffer from Davidson.

A bye for Jade Groen pitted her against Julia Abrams from Radford. Groen moved to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6(1) victory. She will face Hidalgo Vega from North Carolina Central.

Andrea Redondo Gutierrez lost in the second round, after a first-round bye, to Alexandra Evdokimova 7-5, 6-4. She moves to the consolation round.

B Draw Singles:
Leilany Ipunesso moved to the quarterfinals, after a first-round bye, defeating Prerana Koirala from Shaw 6-2, 6-4. She will face Camryn McClure from Radford in the quarterfinals.

Angela Perez advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anne Lou Champion from East Carolina. She is set to go up against Savannah Kollock from Davidson.

Chloe Schwarz came back from being down in the first set to defeat Lexi Smolder 0-6, 7-5, 10-7 to advance to the quarterfinals. She will face Kavya Patel from Davidson.

Dasha Osadova dropped her second-round contest to Davidson's Daniela Porges 6-3, 6-4 to drop to the consolation bracket.

Western Carolina continues to play in the NCCU Invitational Saturday.
