Reid Hits Game-Winning Free Throw to Seal Win Over Winthrop

Catamounts open season 2-0 for the first time since 2015-16

The Basics:

Location: Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center – Cullowhee, N.C.   
 
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – With the crowd holding their breath, junior Joi Reid drained her second free throw, after missing the first, to seal a 48-47 win over Winthrop on Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center Thursday. 
 
Turning Point:
Western Carolina trailed 47-45 with nine seconds remaining when junior Mya Love hit a layup and was fouled. Love missed her free throw, but Reid was there for the rebound and was fouled. Reid hit the backend of two free throws to give WCU the 48-47 lead and eventual win. Winthrop's Jada Ryce attempted a last-second three-pointer but it was wide and the buzzer sounded as the game ended. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • In her Catamount debut, Shayne Poirot-Allard led the game with 17 points hitting five of the Catamounts' six three-pointers in the game.
  • Love had 12 points for WCU.
  • Reid led Western Carolina with nine rebounds adding four points with her fourth point turning out to be the game-winner.
  • Paige Powell led Winthrop with 11 points.
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Down the stretch, Western Carolina hit three of its last four free throws.
  • Western Carolina just edged Winthrop with 33 rebounds to the Eagles' 30.
  • The Catamounts outscored Winthrop 13-8 in the fourth quarter.

  • Poirot-Allard's five three-pointers in the game against Winthrop is tied for 10th in program history for three-pointers in a game.
  • The game Thursday was the first time in the history between Western Carolina and Winthrop the game has been decided by one point.
