LAKE CHARLES, La. –
Vonterius Woolbright led six players in double figures with a season-high 19 points as Western Carolina emerged with a 98-91 overtime victory against Lamar on Saturday at the Legacy Center as part of the McNeese State MTE.
WCU improves to 3-2 while Lamar drops to 3-2.
Woolbright finished 7-for-8 from the field, 1-for-2 behind the 3-point line, and 4-6 at the free throw stripe.
Tyzhaun Claude tallied 17 points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Tre Jackson added 16 points followed by
Russell Jones Jr with 14,
DJ Campbell with 12, and
Tyler Harris with 11. Of Campbell's 12 points, five came in the extra session.
Nate Calmese led Lamar with 28 points, going 11-for-22 from the field. Adam Hamilton came off the bench and added 24 points along with nine rebounds followed by Chris Pryor with 20. Jakevion Buckley also finished in double figures with 11.
A Claude layup gave the Catamounts a 10-6 lead just over four minutes into the contest and the Catamounts stretched their advantage to 17-9 thanks to a Jackson 3-pointer with 14:09 to play. A
Bernard Pelote 3-pointer gave WCU a half-best 28-19 cushion and WCU enjoyed a 40-33 lead following a pair of Harris free throws at the 2:19 mark. Lamar closed the half on a 10-2 run, leading at halftime 43-42 on a Calmese jumper just before the buzzer.
Both teams struggled to gain separation in the early stages of the second half with the largest lead enjoyed being three points and the game was tied at 62 at the midpoint of the frame. Lamar grabbed an 80-77 advantage with 3:17 to play on a Hamilton jumper before a Jackson 3-pointer put WCU up 81-80 with 1:55 remaining. Jackson broke an 82-82 tie with the go-ahead 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining. Pryor drew a foul on a 3-point attempt in the final seconds and made each free throw attempts to tie the game and force overtime.
Tied at 89 near the midpoint of the extra session, Campbell completed a three-point play to give the Catamounts the lead for good with 2:01 remaining. A Claude layup with 61 seconds left gave the Catamounts a 94-89 lead before he grabbed a defensive rebound on the next Cardinal possession. Jones Jr. connected on a free throw followed by a pair of Campbell free throws put WCU ahead 97-89 with 21 seconds left. Woolbright made the first of two free throw attempts with 10 seconds left to seal the win.
