Catamounts Fall on the Road at Charleston Southern

The Basics:
Score: Charleston Southern 62, Western Carolina 43

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball fell on the road 62-43 at Charleston Southern Wednesday at the Buccaneer Field House despite a flurried second-half comeback attempt. 
 
Turning Point:
Charleston Southern held Western Carolina to just four points in the first quarter and seven in the second building a double-digit, 24-point, 35-11, lead after the first 20 minutes. The deficit was too large of a margin for the Catamounts even with its second-half scoring surge. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Graduate student Kyla Allison led the team with 14 points scoring 12 of her 14 in the second half. She was also 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
  • Sophomore Shayane Poirot-Allard scored all 10 of her points in the second half including hitting a pair of three-pointers.
  • Catherine Alben came off the bench for Charleston Southern to lead all scorers with 18.
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Charleston Southern pounded the glass, especially in the first half, ripping down 27 first-half rebounds with 11 on the offensive glass equating to eight second-chance points. The Buccaneers ended the game with 44 boards to WCU's 30.
  • The Catamounts were only 4-for-25 in the first two quarters from the field.
  • WCU scored 32 second-half points, 16 each in the third and fourth quarters, after scoring only 11 points in the first 20.
  • Western Carolina found a bit of rhythm in the third quarter outscoring the Buccaneers 16-6 holding Charleston Southern to single-digits in the quarter. 
  • The Catamounts hit all four of its three-pointers in the game in the second half. WCU was 0-for-7 from behind the arch in the first 20 minutes. Western Carolina was 4-of-13 in the second half. 
  • Charleston Southern scored 32 of its points inside the paint.
  • After coughing up the ball 10 times in the first half, WCU only gave up the ball five in the second half for 15 turnovers in the game.
  • The Buccaneers got 35 points from its bench WCU got 12.
  • The Catamounts were 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
  • WCU shot 41.7 percent in the fourth quarter.
  • The Catamounts hit 11 of its 15 field goals in the second half.

  • Allison scored a season-high 14 points against Charleston Southern. She was back on the court after missing the last two games due to illness.
  • Poirot-Allard has scored in double figures in back-to-back games.
  • Jacey Justice hit the first three-pointer of her career.
  • Charleston Southern's win over the Catamounts halts a four-game losing streak and is the Buccaneer's first NCAA Division I victory of the season.
  • The 11 first-half points scored by the Catamounts are the least number of first-half points since scoring 12 in the 64-29 loss to UNCG on Jan. 29, 2022.
  • WCU is now 1-3 on the road this season.
