Catamounts Fall on the Road at UNC Asheville

Hosts Queens in annual Education Day game Thursday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball closed out its five-game road swing with a 64-51 loss at UNC Asheville Monday in Kimmel Arena. 
 
Turning Point:
UNC Asheville hit eight three-pointers in the game and the Catamounts were an infirm 2-10 from the free-throw line missing the first eight in the first half. The clincher was the Bulldogs' 9-0 run to open the third quarter, after WCU cut the lead to one, 34-33. The Catamounts could never claw back after UNCA built the 10 point, 43-33 lead, midway through the third. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Graduate student Kyla Allison led the Catamounts with 11 points. She also had six rebounds. 
  • Shayane Poirot-Allard just missed scoring in double figures with nine points. She also dished out four assists. 
  • UNCA's McKinley Brooks-Sumpter led all scorers with 16 and was 6-of-8 from the free throw line. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • UNCA was 17-of-24 from the free throw line. 
  • After scoring 16 points in the first quarter the Catamounts were tied with the Bulldogs after the first 10 minutes. WCU was outscored 36-25 in the next two quarters.
  • The Catamounts' attempt to mount a comeback in the four quarter was hampered by a scoring drought of almost four minutes as UNCA went over three minutes without scoring as well.
  • Western Carolina scored just 10 points in the fourth quarter. 
  • After hitting four three-pointers in the first 20 minutes, Western Carolina hit only one in the second half going 1-for-7.
  • UNCA won the rebound battle ripping down 40 to the Catamounts' 35. WCU did have 15 offensive boards turning into 13 second-chance points. 
  • Western Carolina shot 28.6 from the field in the third quarter after shooting 40 percent in the second quarter. The Catamounts ended the game at 34.9 percent from the field.
  • The Catamounts had a season-low nine turnovers in the game. 
  • The score was tied four times and the lead changed three times.
  • UNC led for almost 24 minutes of the game. 
  News & Notes
  • Western Carolina is 2-3 against teams from the Big South with the loss to UNCA. 
  • Sophomore Jacey Justice connected on a career-high two three-pointers.
  • Allison has scored in double figures in back-to-back games and three of the last five games.
  • Poirot-Allard played 38 minutes against UNCA. In the last four games, she has played 157 minutes missing a total of three minutes of play in the last four games. 
  • Western Carolina has hit five or more three-pointers in six of the seven games on the year.
  • The Catamounts are 1-4 over the last five games.
  • Freshman Reagan Trumm has hit at least one three-pointer in five of seven games.
