Catamounts Open 2022-23 Season With Win Over Bluefield State

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Graduate student Kyla Allison returned to the Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center after missing all of the 2021-22 season to pace Western Carolina women's basketball with 13 points in the Catamounts' 63-46 home opening win over Bluefield State Monday. 
 
Turning Point:
Western Carolina outscored Bluefield State 32-20 in the first two quarters, including holding the Big Blue to seven points in the second to muscle its way to a win.
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Allison led all scorers with 13 points adding five assists and six rebounds.
  • Freshman Reagan Trumm made her Catamount debut with 11 points while fellow rookie Kehinde Obasuyi added 10.
  • Senior Endia Holliday ripped down a career-high 12 rebounds in the game, just missing a double-double with nine points and also added a block.
  • Junior Joi Reid was just behind Holliday with 11 rebounds as she, too, just missed a double-double by scoring eight points. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina ripped down 47 rebounds in the game, thanks in part to Holliday and Reid's double-figure rebounding performances.
  • The Catamounts scored 36 of their 63 points inside the paint.
  • WCU drained five 3-pointers in the game, with two of the five from the younger Trumm sister.
  • Western Carolina ended the game shooting 40 percent from the field and held Bluefield State to 32.7 percent. 
  • The Catamounts won three of the four quarters with Bluefield State closing out the contest by outscoring WCU 16-15 in the final 10 minutes. 
  • Western Carolina's bench made some noise in the game, combining to score 21 points.
  • Western Carolina led for 37:58 of the game.
  • The Catamounts shot over 50 percent in the first quarter.

  • Reid recorded the third double-figure rebounding performance of her career. 
  • Holliday also notched the third double-figure scoring game of her career. 
  • Western Carolina is now 37-21 in season openers all time. 
  • The Catamounts are 3-1 in season openers under Head Coach Kiley Hill.
  • Allison saw her first action in a game in 613 days, since Mar. 4, 2021.
  • Allison scored in double figures for the 16th time in her career.
  • Not one but two freshmen scored in double figures vs. Bluefield State.  Obasuyi scored 10 pts. in the first half and Reagan Trumm ended the game with 11. According to available records, they are the first pair of freshmen to score double figures in their opening game in program history.
