CULLOWHEE, N.C. –
Vonterius Woolbright scored a career-best 21 points and
Marlow Gilmore logged his first double-double of the season as Western Carolina cruised past Brevard 99-55 on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center on Saturday.
WCU improves to 5-6 with the win while Brevard drops to 2-6.
Woolbright edged his previous career-best of 20 points set last season at ETSU. The Albany, Ga. native finished 7-for-8 from the field and 7-for-8 at the free throw line while also grabbing nine rebounds. Gilmore tallied a season-best 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his second career double-double.
Russell Jones Jr. contributed 14 points while
Tyzhaun Claude added 12.
Sly White and Ryan Smith paced Brevard with 14 points apiece.
The Catamounts opened the game on a 7-0 run and pushed their lead to double-digits, 14-3, following a
Tyler Harris 3-pointer at the 15:07 mark. Following a Jadon Carnes 3-pointer that brought Brevard within 10, 20-10, with 12:40 to go, the Catamounts used a 9-3 run to pull ahead 29-13 thanks to a Woolbright layup just past the midpoint of the half. Jones Jr beat the buzzer with a long 3-pointer to send the Catamounts into halftime with a 57-30 lead.
Woolbright opened the second half scoring with a pair of free throws eight seconds into the period. A Harris 3-pointer on the next possession pushed the WCU lead past the 30-point threshold and the Catamounts led by as many as 45 points in the second half. A thunderous dunk by Gilmore with 44 seconds remaining served as the game's final points.
WCU dominated the glass, outrebounding Brevard 51-21. For the game, the Catamounts finished 35-for-65 (53.8 percent) from the field, 13-for-30 (43.3 percent) behind the 3-point line, and 16-for-25 (64 percent) at the free throw line. Brevard was 20-for-58 (34.5 percent) from the field, 9-for-22 (40.9 percent) on 3-point attempts, and 6-for-10 (60 percent) at the free throw line.
The Catamounts break for exams next week, returning to action on Dec. 17 at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
