Catamounts Comeback Falls Short Against UNC Wilmington

CHEROKEE, N.C. – A slow start hampered Western Carolina women's basketball as the Catamounts fell to UNC Wilmington 60-51 Wednesday as part of the Cherokee Invitational / Women's College Basketball Showcase in Cherokee, N.C. at the Harrah's Cherokee Casino and Resort.
 
Turning Point:
The Catamounts were held to 16 first-half points and didn't score for over four minutes, at the end of the first quarter and the start of the second. WCU did not hit a field goal in the second quarter until 2:04 left. The Catamounts did attempt a comeback in the second half but the Seahawks kept WCU at arm's length by connecting on 19-of-21 free throws in the game.
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Sophomore Shayane Poirot-Allard led all scorers with 14 points.
  • Graduate student Kyla Allison added 10 points – all in the second half. 
  • Senior Endia Holliday led the Catamounts with six rebounds.
  • Lexi Jackson posted a double-double for UNC Wilmington with 10 points and 11 rebounds. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • After scoring 16 points in the first half, Western Carolina came roaring back scoring 35 points in the second half including 25 fourth-quarter points.
  • Western Carolina held UNCW to nine points in the third quarter but couldn't gain any ground scoring only 10 points.
  • The Catamounts cut the UNCW lead to six, 55-49, with 55 seconds left but the Seahawks went 5-of-6 from the free throw line to ice the game. 
  • For the game, Western Carolina shot 39.5 percent from the field but shot 53.3 percent in the fourth quarter during its comeback attempt.
  • UNCW pulled down 35 rebounds including 23 on the defensive end.
  • The Seahawks scored 21 points off of WCU's 18 turnovers.
  • UNCW scored 32 of its 60 points inside the paint.
 News & Notes
  • Allison has scored in double figures in the last three games and five of the last six. 
  • Allison had a season-high two blocks and two steals against UNCW.
  • Poirot-Allard has scored in double figures in three straight contests.
  • The Catamounts' six blocks in the game tie for a season-high.
  • Holliday earned her second start of the season.
