Catamount Comeback at Mercer Falls Short

Closes out road swing at Samford Saturday

The Basics
 Score: Mercer 46, Western Carolina 40
 Records: Western Carolina 6-18, 0-10 SoCon, Mercer 16-6, 9-1
 Location: Hawkins Arena, Macon, Ga.  
 
MACON, Ga. – Western Carolina women's basketball had a strong fourth quarter, outscoring Mercer 18-10, before falling to the Bears 46-40 Thursday in Hawkins Arena. 
 
Western Carolina outscored Mercer 12-4 in the first eight-plus minutes of the fourth quarter and cut the Bears lead to six, 40-36 with 1:18 left before the Bears pulled away outscoring WCU six to four.  
 
Turning Point:
Mercer went on an 11-1 run in the final five minutes of the second quarter overcoming a 6-5 first-quarter deficit outscoring the Catamounts 18-8 in the second quarter. 
 Individual Leaders
  • Junior Endia Holliday led the Catamounts with 10 points.
  • Sophomore Joi Reid ripped down nine rebounds to pace WCU. 
  • Graduate Madison Pack had a balanced attack of seven points and six rebounds.
  • Jaron Doughtery led Mercer with 11 points leading three Bears in double figures. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • WCU's chance of deep cuts into the Mercer lead in the fourth quarter was hampered by going 0-for-7 from the free-throw line. For the game, the Catamounts were 5-for-17. 
  • Western Carolina was held to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters before scoring 18 in the fourth.  
  • The Catamounts closed out the fourth quarter hitting nine of its last 11 field goals. 
  • Western Carolina had 22 turnovers in the game turning into 16 points for the Bears. 
  • The Catamounts shot slightly better than Mercer shooting 34 percent from the field to the Bears' 30 percent. 
  • Western Carolina hit only one three-pointer in the game and the Bears hit four. 
  • The Catamounts scored 22 of its 40 points inside the paint. 
  • Mercer was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter hitting four of its total six free throws in the final 10 minutes. 
 
 News & Notes
  • Mercer's five first-quarter points, against the Catamounts, was its lowest opening quarter points of the season. 
  • Western Carolina held Mercer to its lowest scoring output, 46-points, of the season. It is the first time the Bears have scored under 50 points in a game since scoring 47 points in the loss to UCF on Dec. 12, 2021.
  • With 833 career points, Tembre Moates is two points shy of moving up from 26 in the WCU record books for points to 25th. 
  • Pack has hit at least one three-pointer in the last four games. 
  • Sophomore Audrey Meyers picked up her seventh start of the season and her first start since Nov. 29, 2021, against Mars Hill.
