Catamounts Sweep Day One Action at River City Lead-Off

The Basics

Jacksonville, Fla. – Western Carolina softball swept day one action at the River City Lead-Off defeating Winthrop 3-1 and downing host Jacksonville 2-1 in the nightcap at the Pruitt Softball Complex.

Turning Point 
Western Carolina broke open a scoreless game with a run in the third and followed with a pair of runs in the fifth to ice the game. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Junior Brooklynn Brewington broke open a scoreless game with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third. Savannah Rice led off with a one-out walk, and pinch-run for by Claudia Riddle who promptly stole second and third. Brewington sent her home on a groundout to second base. 
  • Rice struck again on the base path in the fifth inning when she launched a one-out home run for a 2-0 Catamount lead. 
  • The Catamounts scored the second run of the fifth inning when Brewington hit a bunt single and went on to steal second, third, and home, in the course of the inning. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Rice got the start in the pitching circle and tossed a two-hit shutout and fanned nine batters. She is 1-0 to start the season.
  • The Catamounts had four hits in the game coming from Brewington, Bailey Huneycutt, Riley Lambert, and Rice. 
  • WCU had five stolen bases in the game led by Brewington's three swipes. 
  • Winthrop left six runners on base and the Catamounts stranded five. 
  • The Eagles were sat down in order in five of the six innings they came to bat.

Turning Point 
The Catamounts got on the board in the third inning breaking open a scoreless game and scoring what would be the game-clinching run in the top of the fifth. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Junior Samantha Reele led off the third inning with a double and moved to third on a single by Perillo. Reele scored on a groundout RBI by Brewington. 
  • WCU went up 2-0 on a Jacksonville error. It was Reele who scored the second run of the game after drawing a walk, moving to second on a Perillo groundout, and scoring on the Dolphin's miscue on a bunt attempt by Brewington. 
  • Jacksonville cut the Catamount lead in half with a home run in the bottom of the sixth. 
  • Catamount junior hurler Jayme Eilers doused the Dolphins hopes of a comeback striking out the side to end the game. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Eilers got the start in the circle tossing a complete game. She took the win allowing one run on two hits and striking out 11. 
  • Western Carolina had five hits in the game.
  • Jacksonville had two errors in the game. 
 
 News & Notes 
  • Rice got the first hit and the first home run of her Catamount career. 
  • Rice has gotten a shutout, in the pitching circle, in two of her first three starts to open a season in her career. As a freshman, she earned a 2-0 victory over Clemson on Feb. 12, 2020.
  • The Catamounts open the season 2-0 for the second-straight season. 
  • Eilers was two strikeouts away from tying her career-high in strikeouts of 13 with 11 against Jacksonville. 
  • Brewington tied the WCU program record for stolen bases in a game with three against Winthrop. 
  • With her 11 strikeouts against Jacksonville, Eilers now has 200 strikeouts in her career making her the seventh Catamount in program history to have 200 or more strikeouts.
  • Western Carolina is now 2-1 against Jacksonville all-time. 
  • WCU has now won the last two meetings against Winthrop and six of the last seven.
