Jacksonville, Fla. – Western Carolina softball split day two action of the River City Lead-Off Saturday falling to Campbell 3-1 before bouncing back to defeat Jacksonville 4-3 in nine innings at Pruitt Softball Complex.

Turning Point 
Campbell exploded for three runs in the third inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit and held on to take the win. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Western Carolina took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Savannah Rice drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Savannah Baldwin. Lindsay Perrillo's RBI single to center field scored Rice for the Catamounts lone run of the game. 
  • The Camels posted three runs in the third inning.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Rookie pitcher Tessa Juett got her first start as a Catamount against Campbell and takes the loss. She went 2.1 innings giving up three runs on three hits.
  • Fellow freshman pitcher Makenzie Martin replaced Juett in the third inning and tossed 3.2 scoreless innings yielding two hits. 
  • Each team had five hits in the game.
  • Myra Twitty and Perillo each went 2-for-3 in the game.

Turning Point 
Senior Bailey Huneycutt hit an RBI single, in the top of the ninth, to give Western Carolina a 4-3 lead as the Catamounts went on to hold off Jacksonville in the bottom of the frame and claim the win. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Riley Lambert's single to left field set up the Catamounts' first score of the game in the second inning. She moved to second setting up a single by Reele and Lambert went home on a throw by the Dolphins. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Jacksonville tied the game 1-1 on a fielder's choice RBI. 
  • Down to the final three outs, Rice made sure to keep the Catamounts in the game with a lead-off home run in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. 
  • Western Carolina weathered a Jacksonville one-out single to get the next two outs and force extra innings. 
  • With the international tie-breaker rule in effect, pinch-runner Claudia Riddle was placed on second for the Catamounts to open the eighth inning. After Riddle advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Lambert. 
  • Jacksonville answered in the bottom of the eighth with a home run to tie the game 3-3.
  •  Rice was placed on second to begin the ninth inning. After she advanced to third, Rice scored thanks to the RBI single to left field by Huneycutt.
  • A groundout and two pop-ups ended Jacksonville's comeback attempt. 
 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Rice got the start inside the circle and went six innings in the no-decision. She gave up two runs on five hits and struck out one. 
  • Jayme Eilers replaced Rice to begin the seventh inning. She gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout to pick up the win and improve to 2-0 on the young season. 
  • The Catamounts had nine hits in the game and gave up seven to Jacksonville. 
  • Jeralynn Wells went 3-for-4 at the plate.
  • Lambert was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
 News & Notes 
  • Rice has hit a home run in two of the last three games she has been in the batting lineup. 
  • Western Carolina is now 3-1 against Jacksonville all-time. 
  • The Catamounts begin the season 3-1 for the first time since 2016.
  • In the pair of games Saturday, Lambert went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina concludes play in the River City Lead-off on Sunday facing N.C. State at 10 a.m. The Catamounts will move over to the North Florida campus to face the Wolfpack.
