Catamounts Drop Pair of Games at Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Western Carolina dropped a pair of games on the first day of the Cougar Classic, hosted by College of Charleston, Friday at Patriots Point. The Catamounts fell in the morning game 3-0 to Appalachian State and lost the second game of the day to Connecticut 4-0.
 
Appalachian State 3, Western Carolina 0 
 
Turning Point 
Appalachian State broke open a scoreless game scoring a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth.
 
How it Happened 
  • The Mountaineers scored the first run of the game, in the fourth, from an RBI single up the middle with two outs. 
  • Appalachian State made the most out of bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fifth as the Mountaineers scored a pair of runs on a walk and a hits batsman. 
  • Western Carolina attempted a rally in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back singles by Riley Lambert and Savannah Rice and Jeralynn Wells getting hit by a pitch with one out loaded the bases. A fly-out and a runner called out at the plate ended the comeback attempt. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Catamount pitcher Rice takes the loss falling to 3-1 on the season. She tossed a complete game giving up two earned runs, allowed two runs on a walk and a hits batsman, walked three, and struck out 10. 
  • Appalachian State had six hits in the contest. 
  • The Catamounts had three hits in the game, two coming in the top of the seventh. 
  • WCU committed two errors. 
 
 Connecticut 4, Western Carolina 0
 
Turning Point 
After three scoreless innings, Connecticut scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and WCU could never crawl back into the game. 
 
How it Happened 
  • In the fourth inning, Connecticut faced relief pitcher Tessa Juett. The Huskies used a walk, a passed ball, and a double to score the first run. UCONN's second run of the inning was courtesy of an RBI single. The Huskies scored their third and fourth runs on a Catamount error. 
  • Western Carolina had a chance to climb back into the game in the top of the fifth when Myra Twitty and Bailey Huneycutt led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Natalie Henry walked to load the bases. The trio was stranded on a strikeout to end the inning.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Jayme Eilers got the start but had no-decision after being lifted after three innings. She threw three scoreless giving up two hits, walking three, and striking out four.
  • Juett takes the loss falling to 1-2 on the season. She closed out the game giving up four runs, two earned, allowing five hits, and walking one. 
  • UCONN had seven hits in the game and Western Carolina had four. 
  • The Huskies had six stolen bases in the game.
  • Each team had an error. 
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Bethany Dobias got her first hit as a Catamount in the game against UCONN.
  • Rice notched her second double-digit strikeout performance in the circle this season with 10 strikeouts against Appalachian State.
