Catamounts Fall in Extra Innings at College of Charleston; Drops Pair of Games

Concludes play at Cougar Classic Sunday

The Basics:

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Western Carolina dropped a pair of games on day two of the Cougar Classic including a heartbreaker to host College of Charleston 5-4 in eight innings in the nightcap of the tournament. Earlier in the day, the Catamounts fell to Connecticut in five innings. 
 
Connecticut 8, Western Carolina 0
 
Turning Point 
Connecticut took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first and exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth to cut the game to five innings. Western Carolina was held to just one hit. 
 
How it Happened 
  • A Catamount error and an RBI single scored the Huskies' first run in the top of the first. 
  • UCONN exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth.
  • The game was shortened to five innings due to the run-rule when a team is led by eight after five innings. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Catamount pitcher Savannah Rice started the game and went 3.1 innings giving up eight runs, six earned, walking four, and striking out four. She takes the loss and falls to 3-2 on the year.
  • Rookie hurler Makenzie Martin made her second appearance as a Catamount relieving Rice with one out in the fourth. She tossed 1.2 scoreless innings giving up two hits and walking one. 
  • The only hit for the Catamounts was a single by Lindsay Perillo.
 
College of Charleston 5, Western Carolina 4 (8 innings)
 
Turning Point 
Tied 4-4, in the eighth inning, College of Charleston hit a walk-off single to clinch the game, 5-4,
 
How it Happened 
  • Western Carolina took the early lead on a two-run home run by Bailey Huneycutt. A double by Jeralynn Wells, with one out, set up the two-run home run by Huneycutt. 
  • The Catamounts took a 3-0 lead when Myra Twitty hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth.
  • College of Charleston scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. 
  • The Cougars cut the Catamount lead to one, 3-2, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth. 
  • The Catamounts scored its fourth run of the game which began with back-to-back singles by Samantha Reele and Myra Twitty. An RBI single up the middle scored Reele.
  • The Cougars would go on to score three unanswered runs in the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it and the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman Tessa Juett got the start and takes the loss falling to 1-3 on the year. She tossed 7.2 innings giving up five runs, two earned, on seven hits, and struck out four. 
  • The Catamounts committed three errors in the game that led to two Cougar runs. 
  • Western Carolina had 10 hits in the game.
  • Huneycutt, Reele, and Twitty each were 2-for-4 in the game while Henry was 2-for-3. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Western Carolina played in its second extra-inning game of the season. The Catamounts are now 1-1 in those games. 
  • Juett got her third start of the season and tossed a career-long 7.2 innings against College of Charleston.
  • Western Carolina hit multiple home runs in a game for the fourth time this season. 
  • In the Cougar Classic, Riley Lambert is hitting .333 while Twitty is at .300.
  • Huneycutt hit her 24th career home run and is tied for third place in the WCU record books for home runs. 
  • Rice moved into the top-10 in strikeouts in a career, in the WCU record books, sitting in 10th with 140.
