Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Western Carolina softball closed out the Cougar Classic with a 4-2 win over host College of Charleston Sunday at Patriots Point.

Turning Point
Western exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth to overcome a 2-0 College of Charleston lead. The Cougars had only two baserunners in their final three innings at the plate.

How it Happened
  • College of Charleston scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice bunt that sent the Cougar runner home in the bottom of the third.
  • The Cougars scored the second run of the contest on back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Western Carolina's fourth-inning run explosion began with a double by Bethany Dobias. Brooklynn Brewington pushed Dobias to third with a ground out to first.
  • With one out, Natalie Henry was hit by a pitch to place runners at the corners. Bailey Huneycutt came to the plate and hit a frozen rope through the left side scoring Dobias.
  • With two outs, in the fourth, and runners on first and second, Myra Twitty blasted a three-run home run to right-center field.
  • Western Carolina took that offensive momentum into their defense in the bottom of the third. After the Cougars got a runner on first from a bunt single she was erased when she was caught trying to steal second. A flyout for the second and a strikeout ended the Cougars' fifth.
  • The Catamounts only allowed one College of Charleston base runner in the final two innings.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Junior pitcher Savannah Rice tossed a complete game giving up two runs on six hits, striking out four, and did not yield a walk. She improves to 4-2 on the year.
  • The Catamounts had nine hits in the game.
  • Neither team committed an error. Henry was 2-for-3 and Huneycutt was 2-for-4 in the game.
  • College of Charleston was sat down in order in three of the seven innings.
