Catamounts Split Day One Action at Herd March Madness Tourney

Explodes for 12 runs and 11 hits in win over Norfolk State

HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Western Carolina softball split day one action at the Herd March Madness tournament at Dot Hicks Field at Marshall University. The Catamounts dropped the early game 4-3 to Fairfield before coming back in the afternoon in explosive fashion defeating Norfolk State 12-4 in six innings.

Turning Point 
After Western Carolina battled back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game at 3-3, Fairfield hit a solo home run into the top of the fifth and squelched the Catamounts rally attempt in the bottom of the frame. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Fairfield took the 3-0 lead scoring three runs in the top of the fourth. 
  • Western Carolina cut the Stags' lead to one, 3-2, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Bailey Huneycutt led off the inning with a solo home run. Samantha Reele followed with a single but was erased on a fielder's choice placing Riley Lambert on base. Lambert would come around to score thanks to an RBI single to left field. 
  • Natalie Henry was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth and came around to score from an RBI double by Reele to tie the game 3-3.
  • Fairfield took the lead for good on a home run in the top of the seventh.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Despite the strong performance by junior pitcher Savannah Rice, she takes the loss and falls to 4-4 on the season. She tossed a complete game, giving up four runs, two earned, on six hits, and struck out a new career-high 13. 
  • Reele was 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI. 
  • The Catamounts had six hits and Fairfield had four. 
 
Western Carolina 12, Norfolk State 4 (6 innings)
 
Turning Point 
Western Carolina scored 11 runs over the first three innings, including a five-run third, to capture the win over Norfolk State. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Norfolk took its only lead in the game with a run in the top of the first.
  • Western Carolina quickly took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Brooklynn Brewington led off with a single and Natalie Henry was hit by a pitch to place runners on first and second. Huneycutt hit a two-RBI double down the right-field line to score Brewington and Henry.
  • The Catamounts tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second. Mattie Mentel led off the inning with a single and a Brewington sacrifice bunt pushed Mentel to second. For the second time in the game, Henry was hit by a pitch and Mentel moved to third. Reele sent Mentel and Henry home on a two-RBI double to left-center. 
  • A second-straight scoreless inning by Norfolk State kept the game 6-1 in the top of the third. 
  • In the bottom of the third Western Carolina exploded for five runs. Bailey Treadway led off with a single followed by Wells' single that moved Tredway to third. The bases were loaded when Bethany Dobias go to first on a dropped third strike and an error. An RBI single by Mentel scored Treadway. A passed ball by Norfolk State scored the second run of the inning. Pinch hitter Myra Twitty blasted a two-RBI single to right field plating Mentel and Dobias. Huneycutt rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to right field after Brewington came back in at first replacing Twitty.
  • The game looked to have a smooth path to ending in five innings, but Norfolk State had other ideas. A three-run home run cut the Catamount lead to seven. 
  • Western Carolina did cut the game short, ending in the sixth inning, getting an eight-run lead to end the game early. With one out, Treadway singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Wells reached first on a Norfolk State error and moved Treadway to third. Dobias came up and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt allowing Treadway to score and end the game. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Catamount hurler Tessa Juett got the start and went four innings giving up four runs on 10 hits and walking one. She improves to 2-3 on the season.
  • Makenzie Martin relieved Juett in the fifth inning with no outs. She tossed two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and struck out one. 
  • The Catamounts had a season-high 11 hits and also scored a season-high 12 runs. 
  • Huneycutt, Treadway, Wells, and Mentel each had two hits in the game.
  • Huneycutt led the team with three RBI. 
  • Norfolk State had four errors in the game.
 
 News & Notes 
  • Brewington had two stolen bases against Norfolk State and moves into sixth place in the WCU record books for stolen bases in a season.
  • Huneycutt now has 25 home runs and is tied for third in program history for the most home runs in a career. She is tied with former Catamount Crystal Cyr. 
  • Mentel got her first hit as a Catamount against Norfolk State. 
  • Western Carolina has won two of its last three games. 
  • Rice leads the team with 63 strikeouts on the season. 
  • Huneycutt now leads the team with 12 RBI. She is also tied with Reele for the most hits with 15.
  • As a team, Western Carolina has hit at least one home run in the game in three of the last four contests.
  • Huneycutt has at least one hit in the last four games and two hits in three of the last four. 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina is scheduled to face host Marshall at 1 p.m. Saturday in the second day of the Herdl March Madness Tournament.
