HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Western Carolina softball dropped the final game of the Thundering Herd March Madness Tournament, hosted by Marshall University, 11-3, in five innings, against Norfolk State Sunday at Dot Hicks Field.

Turning Point
Tied 3-3, Norfolk State exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to shorten the game to five innings.

How it Happened
  • Western Carolina took the early 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles by Natalie Henry and Bailey Huneycutt. Henry hit a double and came in on a double RBI by Huneycutt.

  • Norfolk State tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
  • Western Carolina retook the lead on an inside-the-park home run by Henry. She sent a shot to the left-center that caromed off the padding on the left-field wall and then let her speed around the bases take over.
  • Norfolk State added a double steal of their own in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3.
  • The fifth and final deciding inning for Norfolk State included a grand slam and some solidly hit RBI singles for the eight-run fifth.

  • Junior Savannah Rice got the start and 1.1 innings giving up two runs on one hit, struck out two, and walked three for the no-decision.
  • Makenzie Martin replaced Rice in the second inning and takes the loss falling to 0-1 on the season. She gave up seven runs on eight hits and struck out one.
  • Caitlin Griffin also saw a 0.1 inning of action in the game.

  • The Catamounts had three extra-base hits in the game – two doubles and a home run.
  • Norfolk State had 11 hits in the game and WCU had six.
