Rookie Mattie Mentel hits first home run as a Catamount

The Basics

CARY, N.C. – Western Carolina split its doubleheader at North Carolina Central Tuesday winning game one 10-2 in five innings before falling in game two 10-8, in an Eagle walk-off three-run home run, at Thomas Brooks Complex.

Turning Point 
Western Carolina scored in four of the five innings and hit two home runs, both multiple run home runs, in the game.
 
How it Happened 
  • The Catamounts took the early 1-0 lead when Myra Twitty drew bases loaded walk scoring Natalie Henry.
  • Back-to-back singles by Riley Lambert and Savannah Rice, along with a walk to Brooklynn Brewington loaded the bases to open the second inning. An Eagle wild pitch allowed Lambert to score. With one out, Bailey Huneycutt hit a three-run home run. 
  • In the third, Bailey Treadway hit a one-out double to right-center and scored thanks to an RBI single by Brewington. 
  • North Carolina Central is on the board with a run in the bottom of the third. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth, a solo home run by the Eagles earned them their second run of the game. 
  • Western Carolina had another big inning in the top of the fifth. With one out, Brewington singled past the shortstop and promptly stole second. Henry's RBI single scored Brewington. With Huneycutt on first, after the fielder's choice, she stole second and scored off an RBI single by pinch hitter Mattie Mentel. Myra Twitty blasted a two-run home run for the Catamounts' fourth and fifth runs of the inning.
  • After a lead-off single, in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles' next three batters were sat down to end the inning in five innings. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Junior Savannah Rice tossed five innings and improves to 5-3 on the year. She gave up two runs on five hits and struck out five. 
  • The Catamounts tied its season-high with 11 hits in the game. 
  • Huneycutt and Twitty each had three RBI in the contest. 
  • Brewington and Huneycutt led the team with a pair of hits each.
  • All but one Catamount in the lineup got a hit in the game.
 
North Carolina Central 10, Western Carolina 8
 
Turning Point 
With Western Carolina leading 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh, North Carolina Central hit a walk-off home run to win the game. 
 
How it Happened 
  • After Western Carolina was sat down in order in the top of the first, the Catamounts got things going in the second inning. 
  • Twitty led off the bottom of the second with a single and was pinch-run for by Claudia Riddle. Treadway followed with a single and was out at second on the fielder's choice that allowed Mentel to reach first and Riddle to move to third. 
  • Mentel stole second setting up Savannah Baldwin's RBI single scoring Riddle and Mentel scored on an N.C. Central error.
  • Baldwin would go ahead and scored on an Eagle error for the third run of the inning.
  • In the third inning, WCU added three more runs. With two outs, Twitty drew a walk and Treadway reached first on a dropped fly ball by the Eagle shortstop. Mentel came up and hit a home run over the centerfield wall. 
  • In the top of the fourth, the Catamounts added a seventh run courtesy of an N.C. Central error. With two outs, Addie Pate drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. A groundout pushed Pate to third and she scored on an Eagle throwing error to first. 
  • North Carolina Central made things interesting scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles led off with a double and with two outs and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A two-RBI single scored a pair of runs. With two on, the bases were loaded again with a walk and a base-clearing three RBI double cut the Catamount lead to two, 7-5.
  • Twitty's RBI single past second base, after Wells reached on a fielder's choice and stole second gave WCU its eighth run of the game. 
  •   N.C. Central cut the Catamount lead to one, 8-7, with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. 
  • The Catamounts did not score in the top of the seventh which opened the door for the Eagles' walk-off three RBI home run to left field. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Tessa Juett started the game for the Catamounts, inside the circle, and gets the no-decision. She went six innings giving up eight runs on seven hits and struck out six.
  • Makenzie Martin replaced Juett with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. She got one out, a strikeout looking before an error set up the three-run home run. She falls to 0-2 on the year. 
  • Western Carolina had nine hits in the game.
  • Twitty and Baldwin each had two hits in the game.
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt has now had at least one hit in seven consecutive games. 
  • Huneycutt hit her 26th career home run in game one against N.C. Central. She is currently in fifth place in the WCU record books for home runs in a career. 
  • Mentel hit her first career home run as a Catamount in game two against N.C. Central.
  • As a team, the Catamounts have hit at least one home run in the last three games and six of the last seven. 
  • Brewington stole her 12th base of the season and is tied for fifth in the WCU record books for stolen bases in a season.
 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina had its game, Thursday, March 17, postponed with Presbyterian. The Catamounts are next set to travel to Gardner-Webb on Mar. 22 to face the Runnin' Bulldogs.
