LEXINGTON, Va. – Western Carolina senior
Makaila McIntyre earned women's Most Outstanding Athlete honors by compiling 30 points as the Catamounts completed the 2022 Southern Conference Indoor Championship at VMI's Corps Physical Training Center.
The WCU men's team earned a second-place finish in the team standings while the women's team placed third after entering Sunday's action in fifth place. Samford swept the men's and women's team titles.
"We had some great highlights this weekend with some wins from Makaila (McIntyre), Mekyll (Robinson), and Javell (Brown)," said head coach
Jesse Norman. "I'm happy for those performances along with our All-Conference performers. We got a couple of school records from Justin (Hayes) in the 3k and 5k along with Kate (Mattison) in the 5k. I felt like we put some stuff tighter and we're getting closer to winning a championship, we just have to keep progressing and developing."
McIntyre earned her second win of the meet in the women's triple jump with a personal best mark of 12.32 meters (40'5"). McIntyre was the runner-up in the women's 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.55 and also ran a leg of the second place-finishing 4x400-meter relay. The Peachtree City, Ga. native successfully defended her long jump title on Saturday. McIntyre, who won the award along with two other student-athletes at the 2021 Indoor Championships, is the first WCU student-athlete to win the award outright since Janet Carothers in 2009.
Mekyll Robinson won the women's 400-meter dash in a personal best time of 56.72.
Marissa Blakely placed fourth with a finishing time of 57.63 with
Nytrinitey Jenkins placing eighth with a time of 58.26.
Robinson was the runner-up in the women's 200-meter dash with an indoor personal best time of 24.67. Blakely tallied a seventh-place result as she finished the race in 25.57.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Jenkins, McIntyre, Robinson, and Blakely closed out the meet with a runner-up finish. The quartet teamed up to finish the race in 3:54.24.
Victoria Solheim finished in third place in the women's weight throw with a top toss of 15.77 meters (51'9").
Blakely cleared an indoor personal best 1.59 meters (5'2.5") to earn a fifth-place finish in the women's high jump.
Omare McBride placed eighth after clearing a height of 1.49 meters (4'10.5").
Kate Mattison finished fifth in the mile with a personal best time of 4:59.49. Later in the day, she lowered her school record in the women's 5,000-meter run to 17:23.51. She finished the race in sixth place.
Dami Shodeinde scored a fifth-place result in the 60-meter hurdles after finishing the race with a time of 8.86.
Javell Brown won the men's triple jump with a personal best mark of 15.46 meters (50'8.75"). Brown's leap is the top triple jump mark in the history of the Corps Physical Training Center.
Javon Brown placed third with a leap of 14.54 meters (47'8.5") followed by
Tyler Rodriguez in sixth with a leap of 13.72 meters (45'0.25").
Owen Barr was eighth in the final scoring position with a mark of 13.56 meters (44'6").
Charles Cooley was third in the men's pole vault after clearing a height of 4.60 meters (15'1").
Thomas Martin was fifth after he topped out at a height of 4.45 meters (14'7.25").
David Miles finished the men's 200-meter dash in third place with a time of 21.67.
Marcus Brown was fifth with a time of 21.91 followed by
Michael Harris in seventh at 22.46 and
Tyler Manigault in eighth with a time of 26.42.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Brown, Miles,
Michael Harris, and
Kevin Haley, Jr. teamed up for a third-place finish with a time of 3:18.46.
Kaleb Ambrose placed fourth in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.30.
Harris earned a fifth-place finish in the men's 400-meter dash after posting a time of 48.87.
In the men's 60-meter dash, Miles placed fifth with a time of 6.95. Manigault was eighth, finishing the race with a time of 7.14.
Justin Hayes finished in sixth in the men's 5,000-meter run with a new school record time of 14:41.96.
Adam Hart placed eighth in the men's weight throw after recording a top mark of 14.75.
The NCAA will announce the field for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on NCAA.com on Tuesday. The meet will be held at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
