Catamounts Get Road Win at Gardner-Webb Saturday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis picked up its first road match win of the season defeating Gardner-Webb 6-1 Saturday at the Webb Tennis Complex. 
 
TURNING POINT:
 Western Carolina won two of three doubles and battled to win two tie-breaker matches in singles to take five of the six singles matches for the win. 
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles and Luzia Obermeier and Jordyn King picked up a victory at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, to secure the Catamounts' doubles win. 
  • Miray Konar and Kata Foldeak battled to the end before losing at No. 2 doubles in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2-7).
  • Senior Hoda Habib sped through her No.6 singles match blanking her opponent Katie Watts, 6-0, 6-0 for WCU's first singles win of the match. 
  • Western Carolina went on to clinch the match with wins at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 2 singles. 
  • Antonella Benavides had to dig deep and battled to remain defeated in singles play as she went to a tiebreaker to pick up the win at No. 5 singles. She won the first set against Elise Semmartin 6-4, before dropping the second set 4-6. In the tiebreaker 10-5 to lock down the victory. 
  • Gardner-Webb picked up its lone point of the match on a marathon match between Obermeier and Elin Hellbert. Obermeier won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 4-6. Obermeier dropped the third set 4-6. 
 NOTES:
  • Western Carolina won its third match in the last four meetings against Gardner-Webb. 
  • Benavides is 3-0 in singles play to open the season. 
  • The Catamounts are on a two-match winning streak. 
  • Smith and Pezzuco have won their last two matches at No. 1 doubles. 
  • King and Obermeier lead the team with three wins in doubles. 
 
UPCOMING:
 Western Carolina continues its road swing on Feb. 12 with a match at South Carolina State which is set to begin at 1 p.m.
