Catamounts Head to Thundering Herd March Madness Tournament

WCU coming off of an 11-day hiatus

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball hits the road for its final tournament of the regular season traveling to Huntington, W.V. to compete in the Thundering Herd March Madness Tournament hosted by Marshall Mar. 11-13. 
 
The Catamounts will play Fairfield and Norfolk State on Friday, a single game against Marshall on Saturday, and wrap up the tournament with rematches against Norfolk State and Fairfield on Sunday. Western Carolina kick-off the tournament Friday at 9 a.m. against Fairfield.

Series Breakdown
 
Fairfield | Norfolk State
  • Western Carolina will meet Fairfield and Norfolk State for the first time in program history. 
     
Notes:
  • Fairfield is 3-7 entering the tournament and like the Catamounts have not played since Feb. 27.
  • Western Carolina and Fairfield have one common opponent in N.C. State. The Catamounts blanked the Wolfpack earlier this season 1-0 while the Stag's lost 5-2 and 16-1 on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19.
  • Allie Bridgman leads the Stags with a .333 batting average with five hits and one home run. 
  • Norfolk State will meet James Madison Thursday, Mar. 10, before playing in the Marshall tournament. Before playing JMU the team has a 10-9 record. 
  • The Catamounts and Norfolk State have one common opponent on the season in Youngstown State. WCU defeated Youngstown State 2-1 on Feb. 18 while the Spartans lost 7-2 on Feb. 26.
  • Norfolk State has four players hitting above .300 led by Tuli Iosefa who is hitting .360. She has 18 hits, three doubles, and one home run. 
 
Marshall
  •  Western Carolina and Marshall meet for the second time in the two program's history. The Thundering Herd won the lone meeting 10-8 on Feb. 23, 2007, at a tournament hosted by Charlotte. 
     
Notes:
  • Marshall is on an eight-game winning streak after sweeping the tournament at Campbell last weekend including beating host Campbell 6-3. 
  • The Thundering Herd's last loss was against South Carolina, 7-3, on Feb. 19.
  • Western Carolina and Marshall have two common opponents on the season as both have faced Campbell and Winthrop. The Thundering Herd are 2-0 against the two teams while WCU lost to Campbell and defeated Winthrop twice this season.  
  • Marshall has two players hitting above .400 and four hitting above .300. Ally Harrell leads the Thundering Herd battery hitting .458 with 22 hits, four doubles, and two home runs. 
  • Thundering Herd pitcher Sydney Nestor has a .94 ERA with an 8-3 record and 112 strikeouts. 
 
 WESTERN CAROLINA NOTES
  •  Western Carolina will hit the field on Friday for the first time in 11 days. The Catamounts have not played since Feb. 27 when it closed out the Cougar Classic with a 4-2 win over College of Charleston. 
  • The Catamounts were scheduled to play at South Carolina State Mar. 2 but the game was postponed. 
  • Freshman Natalie Henry leads the Catamounts with a .318 batting average with nine hits and two home runs. 
  • In the last two games of the Cougar Classic, Western Carolina stepped up its offense. In the pair of games against College of Charleston, to close out the tournament, the Catamounts hit .322 as a team and had seven extra-base hits, four doubles, and three home runs. 
  • Henry hit a scorching .667 in the pair of games while seniors Bailey Huneycutt and Myra Twitty each hit .500. Twitty had two home runs and four RBI in the pair of games against the Cougars. 
  • Junior Jayme Eilers leads the Catamount pitching staff with a 1.38 ERA and 57 strikeouts. Fellow junior hurler, Savannah Rice has a 2.40 ERA with 50 strikeouts. Rice leads the team with two shutouts.
