ATLANTA – Western Carolina tallied 10 top-10 finishes in field events on Friday as the Catamounts opened the 2022 outdoor track & field season at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech at the George C. Griffin Track.
Javell Brown led five WCU student-athletes in the top-10 of the men's long jump. Brown was the runner-up with a mark of 7.09 meters (23'3.25").
Tyler Rodriguez finished fifth with a top mark of 6.84 meters (22'5.25") with
Brandon Harvey following in sixth thanks to his leap of 6.65 meters (21'10").
Kaleb Ambrose finished eighth with a leap of 6.32 meters (20'9"), with
Javon Brown in ninth following a mark of 6.29 meters (20'7.75").
Charles Cooley tied an outdoor personal best in the pole vault after clearing a height of 4.60 meters (15'1"). Cooley finished in third place in the event.
In the men's shot put,
Ryan Eldridge led a 5-6-7 finish with a top throw of 15.36 meters (50'0.75").
Adam Hart was sixth with a personal best throw of 15.19 meters (49'10") with
Riley Center in seventh thanks to a mark of 14.34 meters (47'0.75").
Mickey Schihl finished in sixth in the men's 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 6:48.14.
Makaila McIntyre finished fifth in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.07. McIntyre was just .01 off of tying her personal best in the event which was set at the 2021 SoCon Championship.
Sydney Runyan ran a personal best time of 18:30 to earn an eighth-place finish in the women's 5,000-meter run.
Omare McBride picked up a tenth-place finish in the women's triple jump with an outdoor-best mark of 5.29 meters (17'4.25").
The meet continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the men's hammer throw, which was rescheduled due to inclement weather. Running events kick off at 1 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
