Catamounts rebound to 13th as the three-day event is condensed to two days

Gulf Shores, Ala. – Western Carolina women's golf rebounded four spots to 13th-place in the second round where it finished the 54-hole Bama Beach Bash that concluded Monday evening at the par-72, 6,002-yard Gulf Shores Golf Club. Freshman Elizabeth Lohbauer climbed into the top 20 individually with a three-round score of 230 to pace the Catamounts in the event.

Scheduled for 54 holes over three days, officials at the course condensed the tournament into just two days because of unfavorable weather forecasts for Tuesday. The golfers played 36 holes of continuous play on Monday to complete the tournament.

Lohbauer countered five bogeys with a trio of birdies to rebound from an 81 on Sunday to shoot a team-best 2-over par 74 in Monday's first round, advancing into a tie for 27th entering the final round. The Venice, Fla., native climbed seven additional spots in the final standings by shooting 3-over par 75 in the third round, charting two additional birdies to finish the event with a team-best eight.

Senior Madison Isaacson finished tied for 50th overall with a three-round score of 237, moving up six spots over the final 36 holes on Monday. Junior Victoria Ladd was WCU's second-biggest gainer in the second round, rallying 23 spots into a tie for 61st where she finished the tournament. Ladd shot 4-over par 76 in the second 18 holes before closing the event with a total of 240. Both Isaacson and Ladd posted four birdies at the event with each of Ladd's coming in the second round.

Rounding out WCU's scoring five were freshman Kaitlyn Wingnean in a tie for 74th at 244 and redshirt freshman Kayleigh Baker in 97th with a score of 276.

Competing unattached as an individual, sophomore Trinity Ahing sat tied with Lohbauer in 27th after shooting a second-round score of 78. The New Bern, N.C., native came home with a final-round score of 5-over 77, slipping five spots in the final standings in a tie for 32nd. Ahing charted four birdies in Monday's second round and three in the final to chart seven collectively.

After rallying to tie first-round leader Texas State in Monday's second round, tournament host South Alabama pulled away for a seven-stroke victory over the final 18 holes, 894-to-901. Texas State finished as the runner-up ahead of Dartmouth in third at 904. Louisiana-Monroe (916) and Jacksonville (920) rounded out the top five finishing teams.

Samantha Yao of Dartmouth leap-frogged first-round leader Federica Tavelli-Westerlund of Texas State in the second round to assume the top spot and then held off a three-way tie for the runner-up spot between teammate Katherine Sung, Siti Shaari of South Alabama, and Tavelli-Westerlund. Yao carded a 54-hole score of 217, three strokes ahead of the three-way tie at 220.

Western Carolina returns to action April 4-5 in the final tune-up before the conference championship tournament, traveling to Morganton, N.C., for the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate hosted by mountain-rival Appalachian State at the Mimosa Hills Country Club.
