Catamounts Fall on the Road at Gardner-Webb

Bailey Huneycutt hits her second home run in as many games

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Western Carolina softball dropped its single contest at Gardner-Webb Wednesday 6-2 at Brinkley Stadium.

Turning Point 
Gardner-Webb scored six runs over the third, fourth, and fifth inning, including a grand slam in the fourth. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Gardner-Webb broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the third. A bunt single, stolen base, and RBI single secure the run for the Runnin' Bulldogs. 
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the fourth inning with a grand slam. 
  • Gardner-Webb tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth. With bases loaded, the Runnin' Bulldogs scored on an RBI single. 
  • The Catamounts avoided the shutout with two runs in the top of the sixth. Natalie Henry hit a one-out double and scored when Bailey Huneycutt hit a two-run home run. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Western Carolina had five hits in the game. 
  • Catamount pitcher Savannah Rice got the start and went five innings and took the loss falling to 6-4 on the year. She gave up six runs on seven hits and struck out four. 
  • Rookie pitcher Tessa Juett replaced Rice in the sixth innings and sat down the Runnin' Bulldogs in order. 
  • Huneycutt was 2-for-2 in the game with a run scored and two RBI. 
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt pushed her hitting streak to 10-straight. 
  • Brewington stole her 13th base of the season and ranks fifth in the WCU record books. 
  • Huneycutt has hit a home run in back-to-back games and has six on the season tying her with teammate Myra Twitty. 
  • Henry has reached base safely in the last 15 games. 
  • The Catamounts are now 6-4 on the road.
  • WCU has not played a home game since Feb. 16. 
 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina opens Southern Conference play this weekend traveling to ETSU. The altered schedule, due to inclement weather, has the two teams playing a single game on Saturday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
