Catamounts Sink Buccaneers to Open SoCon Play

Two teams will play doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Western Carolina softball opened Southern Conference play with a commanding 7-2 victory at ETSU Saturday at Betsy Basler Field.
 
Turning Point 
Western Carolina scored five runs in the first inning and rode the arm of pitcher Savannah Rice to the victory.
 
How it Happened 
  • Western Carolina scored all five of its runs in the first inning with two outs.
  • Senior Bailey Huneycutt got the Catamounts going in the first inning with a two-out single down the left field line. Fellow senior Myra Twitty with a single that pushed Huneycutt to third. Freshman Mattie Mentel followed with an RBI double down the right field line scoring Huneycutt and Twitter.
  • The Catamounts weren't finished in the third inning as with Mentel on second Savannah Baldwin singled pushing Mentel to third. Rice came up and blasted a three-run home run two centerfield to wrap-up the first inning scoring.
  • ETSU was held scoreless through four innings before scoring off an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Western Carolina got that run back and one more in the top of the seventh. With one out, Savanah Baldwin doubled to centerfield, moved to second on an ETSU throw.
  • Rice picked up her second hit of the day with a double to left center scoring Baldwin. Claudia Riddle pinch ran for Rice and came around to score when Treadway singled past second base to pick up the RBI.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Rice tossed a complete game giving up one run on seven hits, struck out four and only walked one batter. That one walk occurred in the seventh inning. She improves to 7-4 on the season.
  • As a team, Western Carolina had a season-high 13 hits against the Buccaneers.
  • Baldwin and Treadway were each 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Treadway also had two runs scored.
  • Rice had a pair of hits, including her three-run home run, and notched four RBI.
  • Western Carolina left nine runners on base while ETSU abandoned eight.
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt pushed her hitting streak to 11-straight. 
  • Brewington stole her 14th base of the season and is now tied for third in the WCU record books. She is chasing the record of 16 which is held by former Catamounts Amelia Griffin and Jordan Fulton.
  • Natalie Henry has reached base safely in the last 18 games. 
  • The Catamounts have hit at least one home run in the last seven games.
  • Rice hit her fifth home run of the season.
