Catamounts Take Series at ETSU With Bombastic Game Three

Catamounts score program-record 10 runs in the second inning of game three

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Western Carolina won its first Southern Conference series of the season with a split at ETSU Sunday. The Catamounts dropped the second game of the series 3-2 before bouncing back to take game three 14-6 in six innings.

Turning Point 
With Western Carolina clinging to a 2-1 lead, ETSU took advantage of a wild pitch, scoring a runner from third, and a Catamount error to score two runs in the fifth and hold onto the lead.
 
How it Happened 
  • ETSU took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first.
  • The Catamounts answered in the top of the second when Bailey Treadway singled to right-center and Samantha Reele brought her home on a home run to centerfield.
  • ETSU retook the lead in the fifth inning with two runs benefitting from a WCU wild pitch, allowing the runner from third to score, and an error in the outfield also allowing a runner from third to score.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman pitcher Tessa Juett takes the loss and falls to 3-4 on the season. She allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits and struck out two. She only yielded one walk in the contest. 
  • Western Carolina had four hits.

Turning Point 
Western Carolina scored 10 runs in the second inning, after trailing 1-0 a the end of the first inning, and built a cushion that would weather five more runs scored by ETSU through the next four innings. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Just like in game one, ETSU took the early lead scoring a run in the first inning.
  • Western Carolina answered in a bombastic way pouring on 10 runs in the top of the second.
  • The second inning run-fest began with a Myra Twitty walk. Designated player Mattie Mentel followed with a single to left field and Savannah Rice singled to centerfield to load the bases. 
  • WCU had runners at the corners when Mentel was picked off at second but Savannah Baldwin got the scoring started with an RBI single to tie the game 1-1.
  • Reele drew a walk to load the bases again in the second and the Catamounts took a 2-1 lead when Rice scored on a wild pitch. Treadway earned the third walk of the second inning to load the bases for the third time.
  • Brooklynn Brewington doubled to left field plating two runs for a pair of RBI.
  • Natalie Henry's bunt single scored Treadway for an RBI.
  • Bailey Huneycutt finally made ETSU pay with the long ball launching a home run to left-centerfield scoring three. 
  • With two outs, in the second, Mentel drew a walk to set up Rice's two-run home run for the Catamounts' ninth and 10th runs of the second inning.
  • ETSU cut the Catamounts' lead in half scoring four runs in the bottom of the second as WCU led 10-5.
  • Western Carolina would hold ETSU scoreless in the third and fourth innings and tack on two more runs over the next two innings. 
  • In the third inning Reele led off with a walk and with one out Brewington singled and Henry was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Twitty drew a walk to score Reele and Brewington would score when a throw down to where Twitty was at first allowed her to go home.
  • In the fourth inning Rice led off with a single but Baldwin's fielder's choice hit erased pinch-runner Claudia Riddle, who came in for Rice. Reele singled and with two outs, Brewington hit an RBI single to left field allowing Baldwin to score. 
  • The Catamounts, leading by eight runs, 13-5, was unable to shorten the game to five innings when ETSU scored a run to make the score 13-6.
  • Western Carolina put the game away in the sixth inning. WCU scored its 14th run of the game when Rice led off with a single and back-to-back walks to Baldwin and Reele loaded the bases. A ground-out RBI by Treadway scored Rice.
  • ETSU attempted to push the game to seven innings with a one-out double by Sara Muir who was pinch-run for by Ally Chernak. A groundout pushed Chernak to third and a hit batter placed runners at the corners with two outs. WCU clamped down and forced a ground out to shortstop to end the inning and the game. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Rice took the win giving up six runs on 14 hits, walking one, and striking out four. She improves to 8-4 on the season.
  • Rice was on fire at the plate. She was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, and a home run. 
  • The Catamounts had 13 hits in the game.
  • Brewington was 3-for-5 in the contest with three RBI and scored two runs. 
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt is on a 13-game hitting streak.
  • Twitty has reached base safely in the last 10 games. 
  • Brewington stole a total of three bases in the doubleheader and is now tied for first in the WCU record books for stolen bases in a season with 16. She is knotted with former Catamounts Jordan Fulton and Amelia Griffin. 
  • Huneycutt hit her 29th career home run and is tied for second in the WCU record books with former Catamount standout Lauren Ross. 
  • The Catamounts' 14 runs, in game two against ETSU on Sunday, is a season-high. The 14 runs also rank seventh in the WCU record books for runs in a game. 
  • The 10 runs, scored by WCU in the second inning of game two, is a program record for most runs scored in an inning. 
  • As a team, Western Carolina has hit at least one home run in the last nine games. 
  • Rice earned her 21st win in the circle and moves to sixth in the WCU record books for wins in a career.

Western Carolina travels to Greensboro, N.C. to take on North Carolina A&T in a mid-week doubleheader Wednesday. The twin bill is set to begin at 1 p.m. and both contests will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
