Brewington Breaks Single-Season Stolen Base Record in Doubleheader Split

Catamounts host UNCG in SoCon home opener this weekend

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Brooklynn Brewington broke the program's single-season stolen base record as Western Carolina softball split its doubleheader at North Carolina A&T Wednesday winning game one 6-3 before falling in the second game 6-5 in eight innings at Lady Aggie Softball Stadium.

Turning Point 
Western Carolina used a monster fourth inning, scoring four runs, to break a 2-2 tie and only allowed the Aggies one run over the next three and a half innings. 
 
How it Happened 
  • The Catamounts struck first in the opening inning, all without a hit. 
  • Brewington led off the game with a walk and promptly stole second, breaking the program record for stolen bases in a season (17). She padded the stolen base record quickly stealing third.
  • Natalie Henry drew the second walk in the inning and both she and Brewington moved up a base on a wild pitch which allowed Brewington to score.
  • North Carolina A&T's second wild pitch of the inning pushed Henry to score setting up a sacrifice RBI by Bailey Huneycutt for the second run of the inning.
  • North Carolina A&T quickly tied the game by a lead-off triple allowing the Aggie runner to score on a ground out. N.C. A&T tied the game on a solo home run.  
  • The Catamounts' big fourth inning sealed the game for WCU.
  • Myra Twitty got things started in the fourth with a lead-off walk. With one out, Samantha Reele earned the second walk of the inning placing runners on first and second. 
  • Bailey Treadway's RBI double to right-centerfield scored Twitty from second and moved Reele to third. 
  • Rookie Mattie Mentel knocked an RBI single to left field allowing Reele to score. 
  • With two outs, Brewington pushed a bunt single into play earning an RBI when Treadway scored and Mentel scored on an Aggie error.
  • North Carolina A&T cut the Catamount lead in half when the Aggies scored a run in the bottom of the fifth.  
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman pitcher Tessa Juett earns the win improving to 3-5 on the season. She gave up three runs on six hits, struck out six, and did not walk a batter.
  • Defensively, the Catamounts sat North Carolina A&T down in order four times in the game including the last two innings, and did not commit an error.  
  • Western Carolina had four hits in the contest. 
  • Treadway led the team with a hit, a run, an RBI, and a double.

Turning Point 
North Carolina A&T won in a walk-off in the eighth inning with a two-run home run.
 
How it Happened 
  • The Catamounts took the early lead scoring a run in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single by Huneycutt. 
  • A two-run home run in the bottom of the first gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead.
  • Western Carolina tied the game in the third again from an RBI single by Huneycutt.
  • North Carolina A&T capitalized on a pair of singles and two sacrifices to score to take the lead 4-2 in the sixth. 
  • Western Carolina forced extra innings tying the game in the top of the seventh. 
  • With two outs in the seventh, Brewington drew a walk and Henry came up to knock the game-tying two-run home run. 
  • Western Carolina had bases loaded, after placing a runner on second base, on the international tie-breaker rules, with no outs in the eighth. WCU could only manage one run – a sacrifice fly RBI by Reele. 
  • North Carolina A&T hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off win. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Juett, who also pitched game one, got the start in game two as well tossing the complete game. She takes the loss and falls to 3-6 on the season. She gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits, and struck out five. 
  • Huneycutt, Henry, and Brewington each had a pair of hits in the game while Huneycutt and Henry also had two RBI.
  • The Catamounts had seven hits in the contest. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Brewington not only broke the program record for stolen bases in a season, her three stolen bases in game one against North Carolina A&T is the second time this season she tied for the most stolen bags in a game. Brewington now has 19 stolen bases on the year. 
  • Brewington's 19 stolen bases is good for second in the Southern Conference.  
  • Huneycutt had her hitting streak snapped at 13 in game one against North Carolina A&T. 
  • Western Carolina has hit a home run in nine of its last 10 games. 
  • WCU has hit at least one double in the last seven contests. 
  • The Catamounts have now won three of its last five games. 
  • Fourteen of Western Carolina's 15 wins this season have been on the road. 
 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina returns home to host UNCG in its Southern Conference home opener Saturday and Sunday. The doubleheader Saturday is set to begin at 1 p.m. while the conference finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
