Catamounts Drop Doubleheader to UNCG Saturday

Final game of series set for Sunday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Home runs were the name of the game Saturday as Western Carolina and UNCG scored their runs via home runs. The Spartans took the doubleheader at the Catamount Softball Complex winning 3-0 in game one and 7-2 in game two in Southern Conference action.

Turning Point 
UNCG hit a two-run home run in the second and a solo home run in the third, holding Western Carolina to one hit. 
 
How it Happened 
  • A Spartan was hit by a pitch setting up a two-run home run in the second inning.
  • UNCG tacked on its third run of the game on a solo shot in the third.
  • Sophomore Jeralynn Wells spoiled Spartan pitcher Morgan Scott's no-hitter attempt with a single in the sixth inning.
  Inside the Box Score 
  • Junior pitcher Savannah Rice had a solid outing holding the high-powered UNCG offense to only three runs and five hits. She tossed a complete game striking out three and falling to 8-5 on the year. 
  • Western Carolina sat UNCG down in order twice in the game.

Turning Point 
UNCG hit four home runs in the game, with three being two-run shots. 
 
How it Happened 
  • After two scoreless innings, UNCG plated four runs in the top of the third with two-run home runs.
  • Western Carolina cut the UNCG lead in half with a pair of home runs of their own. With two outs, Bailey Huneycutt hit a solo home run that pinged off the light pole in left field. Senior teammate Myra Twitty followed Huneycutt with a home run of her own this one bouncing off the scoreboard, also in left field. 
  • The Spartans tacked on a fifth run with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. 
  • UNCG added two more runs with a two-run home run in the seventh. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Tessa Juett tossed a complete game giving up seven runs on six hits and struck out five and did not yield a walk. She falls to 3-6 on the year. 
  • Juett and the Catamount defense sat UNCG down in order three times in the game. 
  • Western Carolina had two hits in the game. 
 
News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt hit her eighth home run of the season and the 30th of her career. She moves into sole possession of second place in the Western Carolina record books for home runs in a career. 
  • The Catamounts have hit at least one home run in 11 of the last 13 games. 
  • Rice has 188 career home runs and sits in ninth place in the Catamount record books. She needs two strikeouts to move into eighth. 
  • Rice has 94 strikeouts this season already besting her season-high of 78 in 2021. She needs six strikeouts to hit the 100 plateau to become the 14th Catamount pitcher to have 100 or more strikeouts in a season. 
  • The doubleheader against UNCG Saturday was the Catamounts' first home game since Feb. 16.
