CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball dropped the final game of the three-game series against UNCG 9-2 Sunday at the Catamount Softball Complex.  
 
Turning Point 
UNCG hit four home runs in the game scoring seven of its nine runs in the game off of home runs. 
 
How it Happened 
  • Western Carolina took its only lead of the series with a run in the bottom of the first. With two outs Bailey Huneycutt singled past the shortstop. 
  • Still, with two outs in the bottom of the first, Myra Twitty hit a sky-high shot to right field. The ball fell between the right fielder and the left fielder, lost in the sun, and Huneycutt was off on the crack of the bat. She came around and scored for the first run of the game. 
  • UNCG quickly captured the lead with a two-run home run in the second. 
  • A three-run home run in the top of the third gave the Spartans a 5-1 lead. 
  • Back-to-back home runs led off the top of the fifth for UNCG. 
  • Western Carolina plated its second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Samantha Reele hit a frozen rope to the right field. Junior Brooklynn Brewington came up and laid down a bunt of a bunt single to third base beating out the throw. The throw from the third base was errant and allowed Samantha Reele to come around and score. 
  • A two-RBI double closed out the scoring for UNCG in the top of the sixth.  
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Junior pitcher Savannah Rice started the game and tossed two innings before she was replaced by Tessa Juett in the third. 
  • Rice left the game down 2-1 and took the loss. She did come back into the game sixth game and closed out the game. Rice ended the contest tossing four innings giving up two runs on two hits and struck out seven. She falls to 8-6 on the season. 
  •  Juett went three innings giving up seven runs on seven hits and struck out two.
  • Huneycutt paced the team going 2-for-3 with a run scored. 
  • Western Carolina had a total of five hits in the game. 
 
 News & Notes 
  • For the three-game series, Huneycutt had a .500 batting average with three hits, two runs scored, and a home run.
  • Rice eclipsed 100 strikeouts, a career-high for a season, with 101 on the year. She becomes the 14th Catamount pitcher to go over 100 strikeouts in a season. 
  • In her career, Rice has 195 strikeouts and moves into eighth place in the WCU record books for strikeouts in a career. 
  • Huneycutt has 125 hits in her career and ranks 18th in the WCU record books.
