Travels to Samford this weekend

The Basics
Score: USC Upstate 3, Western Carolina 1; USC Upstate 9, Western Carolina 1 (6 innings)
Records: Western Carolina 15-20; USC Upstate 36-3
Location: Cullowhee, N.C. | Catamount Softball Complex

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball fell at home to USC Upstate 3-1, 9-1 (six innings) Wednesday at the Catamount Softball Complex.

USC Upstate 3, Western Carolina 1
Turning Point
USC Upstate scored all three of its runs in the top of the third and held WCU three hits and one run.

How it Happened
  • USC Upstate capitalized on a Western Carolina error in the top of the third. A one-out error by the Catamounts set up back-to-back singles to load the bases and the Spartans' base-clearing three RBI double was all the offensive prowess they would need.
  • Western Carolina avoided being shut out with a run in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Bailey Huneycutt doubled to the right side and she was sent home on an RBI double by Myra Twitty

 Inside the Box Score
  • Junior pitcher Savannah Rice started the game and tossed a complete game. She did not allow an earned run, giving up five hits and striking out three. She falls to 8-7 on the season.
  • Western Carolina's run in the bottom of the seventh broke up USC Upstate's 41.1 consecutive innings without allowing a run and snapped a streak of five straight shutouts.
  • Western Carolina had three hits in the game.
  • The Catamounts sat USC Upstate down in order three times in the game.
  • Huneycutt, Twitty, and Brooklynn Brewington each had hits in the game.

USC Upstate 9, Western Carolina 1 (Six Innings)
Turning Point
USC Upstate scored in five of the six innings and ended the game in six innings with an eight-run, 9-1, win.

How it Happened
  • USC Upstate scored a run in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth.
  • For the second-straight game against the Spartans, the Catamounts avoided a shutout with a run in the final inning of the game.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Natalie Henry doubled to centerfield and moved to third on a USC Upstate error in the outfield. Huneycutt sent her home on a ground-out RBI to second base.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Freshman pitcher Tessa Juett started the game but left the contest after 1.1 innings pitched. Juett was hit by the Catamount catcher. who was trying to throw down to second base, when a Spartan base-runner was attempting to steal second base.
  • When Juett left the game, she had allowed a one-out single, and that runner came around to score. That runner handed Juett the loss as she falls to 3-8.
  • Fellow freshman Makenzie Martin replaced Juett. She tossed three innings giving up five runs on eight hits and struck out three.
  • Caitlin Griffin replaced Martin and closed out the game pitching 1.2 innings three runs on three hits.
  • Western Carolina had six hits in the game.
  • Henry was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

News & Notes
  • Huneycutt has gotten at least one hit in the last three games and five of the last six.
  • Huneycutt has 84 RBI in her career and ranks eighth in the Catamount record books.
  • Rice has 198 career strikeouts and needs two to become the eighth Catamount pitcher to go over 200 strikeouts in a career.
