BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Western Carolina softball dropped the doubleheader at Samford 5-0, 8-4 Saturday at the Samford Softball Field.

Samford scored all five of its runs in the first two innings including a four-run first and held the Catamounts to one hit.Â

How it HappenedÂ
- A couple of RBI singles and a two-run home run gave Samford four runs in the bottom of the first.Â
- The Bulldogs scored its fifth run in the second off an RBI single.

 Inside the Box ScoreÂ
- Junior pitcher Savannah Rice started the game and went one inning before she was lifted for rookie hurler Makenzie Martin. Rice allowed four runs on four hits.
- Martin tossed five innings yielding only one run, allowed five hits, and struck out two.Â
- Samford pitcher McKenzie Newcomb had her perfect game attempt thwarted by junior Samantha Reele's double in the fifth inning.
- Western Carolina had only two base runners in the game as Brooklynn Brewington drew a walk in the sixth. Â

Samford scored in four of the six innings it was at-bat and had three multiple run innings.Â

How it HappenedÂ
- The Catamounts scored its first run of the series taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Brewington led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Natalie Henry followed with a walk and the duo moved to second and third on a fly-out by Bailey Huneycutt. Myra Twitty sent Brewington home from an RBI single to left field.Â
- Samford quickly answered in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run.Â
- A two-RBI double to right field scored two more for Samford in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-1.Â
- Western Carolina cut the Bulldog lead to two in the top of the third.Â
- Brewington began the third with her second single of the game and quickly stole second. With one out, Huneycutt hit a home run to left field for a two-run shot.Â
- Samford answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the third.
- Rice hit a solo home run in the fourth.
- Samford capped the game with two runs in the sixth.Â

- Rice made her second start of the series with Samford tossing a complete game. She gave up eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits, walked three, and struck out five. Rice falls to 8-9 on the season.Â
- Brewington was 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored.Â
- The Catamounts had six hits in the game.

- Huneycutt hit her 31st career home run and continues to sit in second place in the WCU record books. She needs five home runs to usurp former Catamount Hunter Gibbons who ended her career with 35.
- For the season, Huneycutt has nine home runs, and that mark ranks her tied for 11th in the WCU record books for home runs in a season. It is the second time she has made her mark on this list. Her 14 long balls in 2021 gave her a spot at No. 4.Â
- Rice hit her seventh home run of the season and is now tied with teammate Myra Twitty for the second-most home runs on the team.
- As a pitcher, Rice has amassed 203Â strikeouts in her career and becomes the eighth Catamount pitcher in program history to have 200 or more strikeouts in a career.
- For the season, Rice has 104 strikeouts and sits in 11th place in the WCU record books. She needs eight strikeouts to move into 10th.Â
- Brewington stole her 20th base of the season adding to her single-season Western Carolina record. She is only the second conference player on the season to have 20 or more stolen bases. She is two behind ETSU's Kelly Warren who has 22 on the year.Â
