BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Western Carolina softball dropped the final game of the three-game series at Samford 4-1 Sunday at the Samford Softball Field.
Turning Point
Samford scored a run in the first and three decisive runs in the third.
How it Happened
- Samford got on the board in the first inning from a sacrifice fly RBI.
- In the third, Samford scored three runs with two outs.
- Western Carolina got on the board in the top of the fourth and it all started with Bailey Huneycutt. After a long at-bat, Huneycutt blasted a double to right field and move to third on a fly-out by Myra Twitty. Huneycutt scored from an RBI double by Samantha Reele to centerfield.
- The Catamounts had a chance to add to its run total with runners on first and second in the fourth but couldn't push a run across.
Inside the Box Score
- Makenzie Martin got the first start of her Catamount career against Samford. She tossed six innings giving up four runs on seven hits and struck out two falling to 0-3 on the season.
- The Catamounts sat Samford down in order twice in the game.
- Western Carolina stranded six batters on base and had five hits.
News & Notes
- The six innings pitched by Martin is a Catamount career-high for the rookie hurler.
- Reele has gotten a hit in three of the last four games with two of the three hits being a double.
- Brewington had her second-straight multiple-hit game with a pair of hits in the last two games. It is the fifth time in her Catamount career she has had a multi-hit game.
