Jake Peacock made a move in Friday's second round that concluded for all teams on Saturday morning before completing the third round in a tie for 13th overall to lead the Catamounts to a ninth-place tie at the 2022 Sea Palms Invitational that WCU hosted at the par-71, 6,664-yard Sea Palms Resort.
Peacock, who led the Catamounts in four of the five seasonal events in the fall semester, posted his best performance of the spring with a three-round score of 6-over par 219. The Milton, Ga., native finished tied for second with 13 birdies over the 54-hole event including six in the second round, posting an even-par round of 71. Opening the final 18 holes on the back nine, Peacock made the turn for home at 6-over par but finished strong with two birdies and one of 14 eagles in the tournament on the par-5 fourth to close the tournament at 2-over par 73.
Junior
Magnus Pedersen finished the tournament tied for 31st, sliding 18 positions over the final 18 holes with a final-round 5-over par 76. The Moss, Norway, product carded 11 birdies at the tournament, posting a three-round score of 222. He was followed by teammates
Presten Richardson and Tumi Kúld tied for 51st overall with matching scores of 227, just ahead of
Louis Theys in a tie for 60th at 228. Richardson finished tied for fourth in the tournament with 36 pars over the 54-hole event.
Playing unattached as individuals, freshman
Kiefer Bulau carded a three-round score of 230 to finish tied for 70th with junior
Quinton Metz placing in a tie for 83rd with a score of 234.
WCU finished fourth in par-3 scoring overall and recorded 157 pars with 39 birdies as a squad.
Wright State rallied three positions in the final standings on Saturday to claim the team tournament title, posting a tournament-best round of 10-under par 274 to pull ahead of runner-up Radford, 866-to-874. The Raiders were fourth after 36 holes, eight strokes in arrears entering the final 18 holes. Marshall likewise climbed three spots in the final round to finish third at 878 with Oakland (879) and Dayton (883) rounding out the top five.
Thomas Giroux of Oakland paced the 104-golfer field to claim individual medalist honors by five strokes over runner-up Tyler Joes of Marshall, 205-to-210. Jones climbed three spots for the podium finish with Tyler Goecke of Wright State and Radford's Bryce Corbett tying for third, six strokes off the pace at 211.
Western Carolina men's golf returns to action at the Greenville Country Club in Greenville, N.C., for the ECU Invitational March 21-22. The 54-hole tournament will be contested over two days.
