Catamounts Pick up First SoCon Win with Victory over UNCG

Best start to the season since 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis picked up its first win in Southern Conference play defeating UNCG 5-2 Saturday at the UNCG Tennis Complex. 
 
TURNING POINT:
The Catamounts won the doubles point, winning at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles and picking up four of the six wins in singles play.  
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Kata Foldeak and Miray Konar won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles and Luzia Obermeier and Jordyn King clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. 
  • UNCG tied the match, 1-1, as Foldeak lost at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-3. 
  • Senior Jacy Smith put the Catamounts ahead, 2-1, with a win at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
  • The Catamounts went up 3-1 with a win at No. 6 singles when Antonella Benavides won 6-3, 6-2.
  • Miray Konar clinched the match for the Catamounts with a 6-1, 7-6 (5), victory at No. 2 singles. 
  • UNCG picked up one more point in the match-winning at No. 5 singles. 
  • Freshman Luzia Obermeier secured the fifth point for the Catamounts winning the first set 6-3, dropping the second set 6-4 before taking the tiebreaker 10-6.
 
  NOTES:
  • Western Carolina snapped a two-match losing streak to UNCG. It was WCU's second victory at UNCG in the team's 29-match history. 
  • Smith won the 26th singles match of her WCU career and moves into a tie for eighth place in the Catamount record books. 
  • Benavides moved into a tie with Foldeak for the most singles wins this season with five. 
  • Foldeak won her team-leading seventh doubles match. 
  • The Catamounts are on a two-match winning streak and have won six of its last seven matches. 
  • Western Carolina's 7-3 record to open the 2022 season is the best start to a season since the 2014 campaign.

 Western Carolina travels to N.C. Central Sunday for a non-conference match set to begin at noon.
