Catamount Women’s Golf Wins the Oyster Shuck Championship

WCU edged Austin Peay in Tuesday’s championship match up

Charleston, S.C. – Western Carolina women's golf edged Austin Peay, 3-to-2, in the Championship Match of the 2022 Oyster Shuck Match Play on Tuesday morning to win the team championship at the par-72, 5,810-yard Charleston Municipal Golf Course.

WCU advanced into the finals with a pair of 4-to-1 wins on Monday over the College of Coastal Georgia in the opener and over rival Appalachian State in the winner's bracket semifinal. The victory marks WCU's second podium finish in a match-play event this season as the Catamounts were in the championship match at the Aggie Invitational back in early October 2021, finishing second to Elon.

Two Catamounts earned their third individual victories of the tournament on Tuesday as senior Madison Isaacson and freshman Elizabeth Lohbauer won their matches. Isaacson was ahead of APSU's Riley Cooper four holes with two to play in the 4 and 2 win, while Lohbauer was ahead of Shelby Darnell two with one to play in a 2 and 1 win which ultimately clinched the championship for WCU. Redshirt freshman Kayleigh Baker earned her second victory of the match-play event by downing Austin Peay's Erica Scott 3 and 2.

Also for WCU, junior Victoria Ladd dropped her match-up, 5 and 4, with freshman Kaitlyn Wingnean suffering her only defeat of the event, 4 and 3, to the Governors' Kaley Campbell.

Austin Peay posted the runner-up finish with Samford edging Appalachian State, 3-2, in the third-place match. Presbyterian defeated North Carolina A&T 3-2 to win fifth place with the event host The Citadel finishing seventh by downing Coastal Georgia 4-1.

Western Carolina returns to stroke-play competition in two weeks, March 20-22, as it travels to Gulf Shores, Ala., for the Bama Beach Bash, hosted by the University of South Alabama at the Gulf Shores Golf Club. The three-round event will be played over three days with 18 holes of competition each day.
