Catamounts Battle But Fall to No. 69 Kennesaw State

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis hung tough with No. 69 Kennesaw State before falling to the Owls 6-1 Tuesday at the Catamount Tennis Complex. 
 
TURNING POINT:
The Catamounts took the early 1-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to open the match. Kennesaw State went on to win all six singles matches. 
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Western Carolina's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles tandems breezed through Kennesaw State's doubles teams. No. 3 team Luzia Obermeier and Jordyn King won 6-1 and No. 2 doubles Kata Foldeak and Miray Konar won 6-2. The No. 1 doubles did not finish due to the point being clinched. 
  • Kennesaw State went on to earn victories at No. 3, No. 1 No. 6, and No. 5 to clinch the match.
  • Western Carolina's Miray Konar and Jordyn King put up a fight at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
  • King pushed the first set to a tiebreaker 6-7 (6-7) before falling and lost the second set X6-2.
  • Konar lost the first set 6-7 (5-7) and fought back in the second set to win 6-4. In the deciding third set, she lost 10-5, 
  NOTES:
  • The match with Kennesaw State is the Catamounts' first contest this season against a ranked opponent. 
  • The loss to the Owls snaps WCU's three-match winning streak. 
  • Foldeak won her team-leading eighth doubles match.

Western Carolina continues its five-match homestand with a pair of matches Saturday facing Lees-McRae at 11 a.m. and Carson-Newman at 3 p.m.
