CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis picked up a key Southern Conference victory on Thursday defeating Mercer 6-1 at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The win over Mercer locks in the No. 6 seed for the Catamounts in the upcoming 2022 Southern Conference Championships. Western Carolina will face the No. 3 seed, either Samford or Chattanooga, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
TURNING POINT:
Western Carolina swept the doubles point and earned three-straight victories in singles to clinch the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The senior doubles tandem of Jordyn King and Julia Pezzuco breezed through their No. 1 doubles match, 6-1. Miray Konar and Jacy Smith followed at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, to seal the point. No. 2 doubles team of Kata Foldeak and Angela Perez went completed the sweep with a 7-5 win.
- Konar earned the second point with a win at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-4.
- King's victory at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4 put the Catamounts up 3-0.
- Smith secured the match victory by winning at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
- Foldeak won a battle at No. 1 singles winning the first set 6-1, dropping the second set 7-7 (10-12), and bouncing back in the third-set tie-breaker 10-7.
- Mercer avoided the shutout with a win at No. 6 singles.
NOTES:
- Smith won her 35th career doubles match and continues to rank fourth in the WCU record books.
- Puzzuco and King each have 25 career wins in doubles and rank sixth in the WCU record books.
- Western Carolina's 12 wins this season tied for the second-most wins in program history. The 2022 team is tied with the 2019 club.
- The sixth seed in the upcoming 2022 SoCon Championships ties for the highest finish in the conference in program history. WCU also had the sixth seed in 2018.
