CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina combined to score four individual event wins on the first day of the Catamount Classic Friday at the Catamount Athletic Complex as both the men's and women's teams captured two event wins apiece.
Javell Brown led a top-four finish sweep for the Catamounts in the men's long jump as he took the win with a leap of 7.25 meters (23'9.5").
Javon Brown was second with a mark of 7.18 meters (23'6.75"), followed by
Tyler Rodriguez in third at 7.12 meters (23'4.5") and
Kaleb Ambrose in fourth with a new personal best mark of 6.75 meters (22'1.75").
Owen Barr's new personal best leap of 6.46 meters (21'2.5") earned him a ninth-place finish.
Charles Cooley won the men's pole vault by clearing a height of 4.55 meters (14'11").
Thomas Martin finished in second place with an outdoor personal best mark of 4.45 meters (14'7.25"), followed by
Jonathan Lehe in third place as he cleared a height of 4.35 meters (14'3.25"). Martin was also the runner-up in the men's javelin with a throw of 47.06 meters (154'4").
Chesley Kinney earned a sixth-place finish with a mark of 42.94 meters (140'10").
Drew Zink ran a personal best 15:18.52 for a third-place finish in the men's 5,000-meter run with
Clay Summers also recording a personal best in the event, placing sixth after crossing the finish line in 15:23.04.
Nicholas Kiser finished in eighth place, posting a new personal best time of 15.54.58.
Ronald Kent tied for fourth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.15.
Marcus Brown finished seventh, posting a time of 22.30.
Ryan Eldridge finished in fourth place in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 44.53 meters (146'1").
Riley Center's personal best throw of 43.84 meters (143'10") earned him a seventh-place finish and
Adam Hart placed 10
th with a top distance of 40.00 meters (131'3").
Jalen Elwell earned an eighth-place finish in the men's 1,500-meter run with a personal best time of 3:57.08.
Justin Hayes finished ninth, completing the race in 4:00.13.
Marissa Blakely won the women's 200-meter dash, completing the race with a time of 24.96.
Nytrinitey Jenkins was eighth, recording a time of 25.78.
Kate Mattison won the women's 1,500-meter run in a personal best 4:34.39, topping her previous personal best by over four seconds and holds the third-fastest time in the event in program history.
Makaila McIntyre was the runner-up in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.79 meters (19'0").
Erica O'Neal earned a 10
th-place finish with her leap of 5.31 meters (17'5.25").
Alesea Caldwell ran a personal best 18:23.12 in the women's 5,000-meter run to earn a third-place finish.
Sydney Runyan also completed the race with a new personal best, finishing fourth with a time of 18:24.94.
Sara Klemm placed ninth with a time of 19:25.13.
In the women's pole vault,
Carter Unger finished third with a season-best height of 3.50 meters (11'5.75").
Sydney Gallant claimed sixth place with an outdoor personal best height of 3.05 meters (10'0").
Victoria Solheim threw a personal best 48.43 meters (158'10") to finish in fourth place in the hammer throw.
In the 100-meter hurdle prelims, Tre'Breh Scott and
Mallory Lowe qualified for Saturday finals with times of 14.83 and 14.87, respectively.
A total of 13 seniors will be honored during a pre-competition ceremony on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Field action is scheduled to begin at Noon with the men's shot put, women's discus, women's high jump, and men's triple jump. Track events commence at 12:10 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
